I am putting up cedar siding with aluminum nails. Have to predrill every hole and it is very time consuming. Does anyone know if you can get aluminum staples for an air nailer?

A friend of mine in Wisconsin built a house about four years ago. They used a prefinished cedar siding top nailed with stainless. It still looks perfect.

I grew up in a house with Asbestos siding predrilled and nailed with aluminum nails. They have stood up well and are still there, but putting them thru cedar is another story. I wouldn't, they will corrode in two on you.

I highly recommend the 316 stainless siding nails sold by Jamestown Distributors. The smaller sizes are only 14 gauge, you might not have to pre-drill.

I fully recognize that this is not treated siding, but aluminum is rapidly destroyed by many of the treatment materials- just a reminder to any interested persons. Stainless steel would be a good choice and copper nails should work well. Neither is low cost.

If you live in a hurricane prone area, I'd go with SS ring-shank nails and predrill. It may be time consuming, but it would be worth it when a storm comes through.

You might want to try using stainless steel nails as they won"t react with the tannins in the cedar and will eliminate any streaking on the siding from the nails. If cost is an issue you would want to use galvanized splitless nails instead, although they have the potential to streak down the siding.

I used the zinc coated "splitless" siding nails on the cedar I hung this summer. I didn't have splitting problems unless I was within an inch or so of the ends.

Had my fence replaced last year and the workers used aluminum nails in air nailers.
