Fellows, I read with interest your posts on the portaband saws. I immediately got up and went out to the shop and loosened the band on both of my Porter Cable portaband saws. Ever give that a thought? Laying there day in and day out with the belt tight probably makes the frame warp. May not be all of the problem, but may make it last a little longer. Who knows, it may solve your problem. L8R----Fred OH

Not entirely, I did replace the bushings and the rubber "wheel". The blade will still run off if I do not make contact with the material being cut prior to hitting the start switch. I found a tool repair web site that will supposedly assist in trouble shooting tool faults but they failed to follow up. All pulleys that I have ever observed had a crown to keep the belts riding the center. I am tempted to dress the rubber "wheels" to that configuration. What is your opinion?

Like Joe, I have worked for a construction co repairing the power tools, I have had several portabands with the blades running off, have replaced all the bushings, blades [ wheels], tires, guide blocks etc... The front housing is very expensive, which is where I think the problem lies, I have taken the front off a unit that was droped and distroyed the rear housing, and it worked but not for long,, would like to try a new one but the company will not spend that kind of money to fix,, just buy a new one.. Know what they do with the old ones?? I took 20 portabands, 10-15 milwaukee hole shooters, jigsaws, sawsalls, endgrinders ad a bunch of mini and 7 inch side grinders,,, throw them in the compound,, smash them with the backhoe, and throw them in the dumpster.. Isn't that the american way??? Hurts does'nt it

I work for a mechanical contractor that over a period of 20 years has gone thru hundreds of portabands. I gather that both or one of you has trouble with the blade tracking off. Look at the bearing or bushing condition of the non-driven or idler wheel. Play at this point allows the idler to run in a different plane from the drive wheel allowing the blade to track off. Also, if the portaband has been dropped, the housing and/or the idler axle may be bent out of plane with respect to the drive wheel. Hope this helps.
