I've gotten along with my old 7" Sioux grinder for years...but lately it seems like it's gained more weight than I have over the years. What's the best 4 1/2" grinder for the money? Everything I looked at in the store seems to be made either in Japan, China or Brazil, regardless of name, color, or price.
Thanks in advance for your advice and help.

Thanks everyone for your advice...but after asking for it, I didn't take anyones. Yesterday, I stopped by the welding store, and they were as surprised as I was when they found a NOS Sioux 4 1/2" grinder back in the warehouse. Probably about a 1995 model (Pre Snap-On buyout), but built to last! They let me have it for their original invoice price. I'm happy...this will last me for the rest of my life, and still look good on my estate auction!

My B&D 4.5" grinder has been with me for years, and has thousands of hours of operation without a problem. Last year, I sanded my entire house with it prior to painting. That's about 10 hours a day continuous use! I can't find any fault with it.

On the bottom end of the scale, I frequently see the oriental rim 4.5" grinders at the car shows for $5 or so. I know folks who have them and use them. Noisy, but they do the job, and do it for several years aparently.

Hi Rauville,

I would look at the Makita 9005, 5" grinder. It's alomost a full size as a 7" but weighs like a 4.5". Takes 5/8"x 11 wheels at 10000rpm.

You have alot more hand control than a 4.5", more hp and they last a very long time.

Look at amazon.com as they have free shipping and instant $25 rebates for orders of $199 or more.

My father-in-law was an erection forman for prestressed concrete. They went thru 4" grinders like water. He had the best luck with Milwaulkees. I have a Dewalt that is giving me very good service.

I wore out a Makita in a few months. Bought a $19.00 Chinese junker at Big Lots and cannot wear it out. My favorite are 2 Hitachi's I bought used. Great grinders.

Makitas are very tough, but I'd have to say Walter makes probably the best grinder I have ever used. I also have a $20 angle grinder from the C.H.Ina company that ran non-stop for a half hour with a wire wheel brush one day when I was cleaning off the wrought iron rails on the front stairs. It got hotter than hell, but never quit. I used it again with some cut-off disks to dispose of a steel flagpole a few months later. For $20 I can't complain.

personally i have used alot alot alot of angle grinders frome sears to dewalt to 15 dollar harbor freight. personally i like the feel of dewalt and they are buiilt good but another recommendation that i wouldn't be afraid of at all is a bosch. again the bosch is very rugged but isnt quite as comfy in your hand. i prefer also 4 1/2 inch vs 4 inch can get alot more blades (masonry steel etc)

We use 4" grinders hard. Have used Makita, not good, Dewalt, not bad. Believe it or not, the best luck we have had was a 89.00 Black & Decker from the local farm store. We use it to sharpen blades in a lawn mower shop. Sharpen up to 20-30 blades a day sometimes. I cannot believe the B&D has lasted this long, but we have used it for about 2 1/2 years so far. Now for grinding disc, we use Dewalt disc, they seem to last better than any others we have found. My .01 worth.

I consider myself to be an expert on this subject. I have destroyed more grinders than you can mention. I wiped out 3 different craftsman, 4 inch grinders, in 3 days. Each ran about 5 minutes each before they burnt up. Black and Deckers aren't much better. Dewalt's are the best , but the darn stop button will get sucked into the wheel assembly and then it is junk because you can't remove the stone. I also have no luck with drills.

'bout 4 years ago I bought a 4 1/2" Makita at Sears for $89. The sales goon wanted me to buy a 4" Crapsman but I held my ground. That grinder's been great to me.

Rauville: I've been happy with Makita, but at the low end of the scale I bought a 4" grinder for $19.99 from the Homier travelling tool show about 7 years ago, and have abused it to no end--it's still going!

I bought an el cheapo grinder at TSC a couple of years ago for twenty something dollars, it came with 10 grinding wheels. Have used up about half of the wheels and everything is still going strong.

Metabo - No question about it! I've got Milwaukee, DeWalt, Metabo. All are very, very good tools but Metabo is A # 1 hands down! You'll be pleased with any of these three!
