JD 750 stearing problem

I have a 1982 JD 750 w/loader, 4x4, manual stearing. The stearing is stable until I use 3rd gear. At this point my wheels shift back and forth in unison causing my whole front end to shake terribly, while this is happening the stearing wheel is not affected. Is this an indication of improper toe or perhaps poory adjusted tie rods? Our JD 2510 has the same problem but at a higher speed.

I agree with Fawteen. On my JD950 the steering box was loose and when I tightened it up the steering was much better. But as Fawteen mentioned, you probably also have your tow-in set incorrectly.

I've got an '88 750. My first guess would be worn out ball joints in the ends of the tie rod.

You can check your toe-in with just a measuring tape. Lay a straightedge along the outside of each tire. Measure outside to outside in back of the tires and again in front of the tires. The front should be 1/8 to 3/8 inch shorter than the rear for proper toe-in according to my shop manual.

Another possibility is too much play in the steering gear, which is easily adjustable. If you need the procedure, email me.
