I need to replace a 10 hp 3 phase motor with a gas engine;what does the hp rating on the gas engine or at the PTO need to be?

It depends to some extent what the job is. And the elevation at which it will be used. And the temperature. And maybe the relative humidity. Electric can stand quite a bit of short term overload. Internal combustion has less power at higher altitudes. Air cooled power drops off at higher temperatures. On a steady load under good conditions, they can be the same HP.

Double is the safest guess. Might squeak by with 16hp. When we setup compressors to run on gas, we always double the HP of the motor.

You could look at what they do with generators - about 2 hp per 1000 watts, which is about 2 mechanical hp in per 1.33 electrical hp out, or 1.5 x. Jim
