O.T. 1995 Ford F-150 Headlights

Got home this evening my Wife, Discovers the head lites are on in my truck. tried turning lights off with the head lite switch, wouldn't go off, tried dimmmer switch it won't work, had a hot wiring smell, truck would start ok, so the lights weren't on to long. Ended up disconnecting the battery to get the lights off. rehooked battery lights come back on hi-beam. ended up disconnecting the battery for the night. anybody have any Ideals of what could be wrong. Thanks, For all of the replys. It was the multi-function switch, (turn singal, dimmer, wiper, & 4-ways) aparrently I have a wind sheild leak I discover some water while removing the plastic cover around the steerng wheel. Water must have gotten in to the switch, Got a good switch from the salavge yard. a new switch from Ford was well over $100.00 Thanks Dave F.

May also want to check turn signal switch also poorly built to much juice going thru them they also burn out then no lights wipers or signals

It,s your headlight switch thats melted probably also the connector. I see this all the time on Fords. You can get a replacement connector with short wires to repair your wiring so don't let the Ford Dealer tell you that you need a complete wiring harness. The Ford Dealer that I use locally stocks these connectors but I'm not sure if they are OEM or he gets them from the aftermarket. It isn't a hard job so if you can do it yourself you will save some $$$. I always put a little dielectric grease into the plug to keep the connections clean and cool. HTH :>)

Hi Dave,

Could also be a head light relay burnt shut. With the burnt wire smell I would also look for a short in a wire.

If it's anything like the light switch I pulled out of my Mustang back in 2002 after driving across Canada, it is probably fused closed. My headlight switch could barely manage the extra current of the trailer running lights. It was melted and charred when I pulled it out. Insulation was blacked at the switch and the plastic was drooping. Worst of all, on a cold night crossing Saskatchewan, when I pulled on my high beams, the damn thing overloaded and turned off all my lights. It's kinda spooky zipping down the highway in the pitch black with a ton of stuff behind you and not being able to see a hand in front of your face! Luckily, being Saskatchewan, the road was so straight and flat I could have probably fell asleep behind the wheel and woken up just as I was pulling into town. I replaced the switch with a new one and haven't had any problems since. Ford seems to underspec their electrics, from what I can see. Add in a bit of corrosion on the contacts and you can start to pull some heavy amps through components, enough to damage them.
