I have a chance to buy a 1973 Johnson Outboard 65 HP very reasonable. Is this motor prone to specific problems. I am especially concerned with the hydraulic electric shifing lower unit & the CD spark system as this is one of the first non-points/condenser systems which were offered by OMC. Sounds like these could be expensive fixes if they were prone to problems.

I got a 40 HP electric shift nes somewhere back in the 60's the lower unit was repaired / replaced several times under warenty. Finally they gave up and gave me my money back and I bought a 65 HP manual shift and it still is working fine.

They're good engines, but the electric shift thing in trouble-prone and really kills the value. You see these things go on eBay for tiny fractions of what standard-shift models do.

If it works it's not a bad thing. I'd try asking in outboard boards for more info, though.

Had a '72 125 hp for several years (bought new). Ran the doggie out of it as did a friend with a '73 65 hp on a 16 ft Skeeter Hawk. Years later, I bought a Kingfisher 15.5' with a '75 Evin 70hp. The '65 pushed the skeeeter in the mid 40's. See below for the 70 on the KF. 0 problems with any of them.

If the ign pack goes out it's around $250. Elect shift probably about the same.

You're looking at a 32 year old engine and corrosion would be your biggest enemy. Rings are usually not a problem in 2 cycles and reed valves don't seem to ever wear out....neither do spark plugs.

If you buy it, and it has trim, and you want a fast rig, jack it up off the transom about 1" (piece of 1x2 redwood) and put a 24" SS prop on it. Trim it out as far as it will take. On a 16 ft fast hull it'll do 50.....been there done that.

Smooth running engine. I'd say one of OMC's best.

Mark
