Trailer building is a cottage industry in Sikeston, MO. Must be 10 or more shops building them there. Lost of competition and it shows in the prices. Search the on-line yellow pages for "trailers" in Sikeston for numbers. Ja Mar is one company that I have done business with and feel comfortable recommending.

I bought a 8'x16' wood bet utility trailer to haul a car some 12 years ago. VERY happy with it ever since. Hauls every car, tractor, whatever, and works well for household goods/implements/stationary power tools. I spent $800 back then and I see that's still what they go for, ugly but otherwise in good shape. Wood bed is easier to deal with than metal wheel tracks, also.

I agree with previous replies that you can buy about as cheaply as you can build -- maybe more cheaply, in fact, if you use new steel. I built my own all-steel car trailer many years ago because I had access to cheap used steel, hubs, hitch, etc., and I still had several hundred dollars in it by the time I was finished, plus a lot of time. Maybe look for a used trailer; you'll find guys who are getting out of stock-car racing, for example, who will sell a decent trailer for $700 or $800.

northern tools has plans in their catalog. from my experience, unless you have the parts laying around and the spare time to build it, you would be better off buying. case in point: my brother in law watched me build a 16 x 7 tandem axle(elec. brakes on one) wood deck trailer, decided to buy his ready made & spent about $100 more than i had in mine. the only difference was that he got used tires and mine were new. although last saturday he blew one and forgot the spare so his wife had to drive 2 hrs each way so he could get home without leaving his drag car on the side of the road. either way works good, just depends on what you want.

You didn't say if it is to be open or enclosed. While you can make anything depending on your skill level (and I could), it is not worth the agravation to me. I have seen plans available but can't put my finger on them.

I have seen car trailers go for $1500 to out of sight. The cheaper ones usually have treated wood decks, used car tires, and no brakes. From there you can go to steel deck ramp areas to full steel decks to beavertail (rear deck area), etc. Some have storage compartments, spare tire/holder, trailer type tires (steel radials), heavier couplers (2 5/15"), single axle brakes, dual axle brakes, slide out ramps, diamond plate, commercial lights, integral safety chains, tongue jacks, etc.

I think the minimum to consider is to have brakes at least on one axle and better on both. Most state laws require brakes if the total load exceeds 3000 lbs. A lot deals with how much you will use it or what you might end up adding later anyway. I bought both open and enclosed but not recently, though I went with upper end. Roger V.
