We have a 2000 grand am with about 40,000 miles and the brakes seem to make an anoying squeak when we are going slow. I put new pads in it at about 35,000 and the noise went away for awile and then came back. The old pads were not worn out, just noisy. the rotors look like new and the steering wheel doesn't shake or the brake pedal pulsate. Any ideas as to the solution? Thanks in advance!

If you buy the autozone cheapees their prone to squeak. You can get a better base grade at napa for a few dollars more. Get some brake lube and antisqueak glue. Take the pads out and coat the back of the pads with antisqueak glue where they contact with the caliper . I think on your car the caliper bolts dont come out with out force so get a small wire brush and clean all the mess off them in place then coat with the brake lube grease.

You may have a disc runout problem. Seems there were TSB's on some GM cars concerning runout and a couple other problems. I would go to a dealer and have him look them up and see if any pertain to your vehicle. If they have a nice shop tech. he will tell you what may need to be done.

Get rid of the cheap pads which were put on and get a set of Raybestos Quiet Stop brake pads from Link Both the 2.4 Liter and 3.4 Liter engines use the part Raybestos PDG727QS front pad set. They are not only quiet but also since they are made from ceramic material they will not turn the wheels dark and dusty. They cost more at just under $50 but they are worth every penny. Best of all they will not squeal or screech!

Hi Vern,

I agree 1000%.

Have you ever figured out why those Pon-tons always need the high dollar brakes?

I've never been able to understand that one.

All things being equal, put the low-end pads in 'em and they will screech every time. It'll drive ya crazy 'till you finally break down and put some good high quality brake pads in. I dunno.

Doesn't hurt to buy some high nickel content rotors either. Also clean off the rusty scale on the caliper and clean or replace the anti-rattle clips.

Keep posting, we need your input.

Yes, when you had your brakes changed, there should have been a real thin isolator or smear of brake anti-squeek, between the brake caliper piston and the pads. They were sqeeking on the first set as they are supposed. THAT squeek is like a "time to change your brakes" alarm...
I'm sure someone else will offer some more specific advice, and correct some of my terminology...
Hope that helps
Adam
