Try switching to synthetic, engine oil and trans oil. Then drive the speed limit, or like an old guy. Inflate the tires to the right psi too. The best mileage I ever got on my F-150 truck with the I6 motor was 19.5/gallon. Right now I get 36mpg with my Saturn.

Cover the bed.
Run the highest presure and narrowest tire you can.

Drive like you don't trust the brakes.

Remember, the gas peddle turns gas into motion, the brakes turn motion into heat.

keep the windows closed at speed, and use the AC as sparingly as possible.

Don't bother with fancy air filters, exhaust, sparkplugs or any of the other accesories people sugest.

thanks to everyone. i have not thought about using synthetic oil, and perhaps the tires need closer attention. i guess i should be happy with what i am getting. have a nice day.

I have a '92 with 4wd, 5-speed manual. I get around 19.5 mpg. I consider that pretty good for a medium duty truck.

my daughter drives a 1999 v6 short bed conventional cab.
claims about 400 miles per tank going up to 450 per tank when I change the oil with Mobil one. She is on fumes when she fills however don't know size of tank. Just put a tonneu cover on it and havn't heard off any changes yet.

did get between 9 and 14mpg pulling a 16' tandem axle trailer, 4' high sides tarped down about 6' high in center up from Florida. 1200+ miles. 9mpg was heading into strong wind, a/c on and 70 mph. That truck sure surprised me if I hit the bottom of a hill at least 76 mph I would be doing 70 at the top, however hit it at 72 or less and would be in third doing 60 at top. I never used fifth gear when loaded.

The truck mags when the newly restyled Dakota was introduced in '97 model year claimed that a tonneau cover increased gas mileage approximately 4mpg. I never got one. My 97 Dak V8 long bed (a rarity) gets 15.5mpg

Sounds like you aint doing too bad already. I saw a tv documentary once on gas milage and the #1 cause of poor gas milage was underinflated tires. Even more so than hot rodding, or big travel boxes strapped to the top luggage carrier. Keep your tires at proper inflation. Since you will eventually need an air filter get a K&N. Probably wont help gas milage much but at least it's reusable. Dual exhaust will only help if you're at wide open throttle. If you feel you must, there are cat back exhaust kits you can get to help exhaust flow. Figure up how much you're gonna spend on all this, divide my the cost of a gallon of gas, multiply that by 19mpg, and thats how far you can drive on what you're gonna spend. You'll be able to drive thousands of miles for what you spend just to get 1 more mpg. By the way, my Dodge 2500 Cummings gets 20-21mpg on the highway. Got 18mpg towing an '88 Suburban! So, consider a diesel when trade in time comes.

I did the happy dance to get that on my '91 Dakota 4x4, v6, 5 speed. One reason I got a bigger truck (and diesel) this time. Same mileage and more room for a fat boy like me.

I'd leave it stock and be glad you are getting that good mileage. SPending a lot of $ for retrofit stuff, figure how long it's gonna take to recoup that in mileage.

I was getting 15 to 18 mpg with my 1990 Dakota extended cab. I checked the Oxygen sensor and it was in need of replacement. Since then, I have been geting 18 to 22mpg but I also check the tire pressure weekly. James

i certainly appreceiate the terrific responces. i forgot to say it is a 2002 quad cab, with a camper shell on the back. i traded a 95 full size dodge pickup with the 318 motor and i was getting about 19 miles. so figured i should get a little more since it is a smaller truck. thanks again.
