I mentioned a few weeks ago about our Sony digital recording camera that fell in the boat when my wife fell overboard. The camera got very wet--as did the wife.
Anyway after weeks of drying and sitting in front of a dehumidifyer the camera has fired up and everything works BUT the picture quality is not as sharp as it was before swimming.
Is there a way that I could remove the lens and or clean it????
I don't know how to remove the lens.
Thanks for any help.

Go to sony's repair web site. Sounds like you just need the lens and/or CCD chip surface cleaned off. No idea how much its gonna cost ya but I'd at least consider that cost and how far into a new model that will get you. Good luck.

Just for grins, I punched in my camcorder model and the flat rate repair price was $269

I ain't no sales person for Best Buy (really don't like them all that well) but they've gotta pretty good clean/repair dept. I take my Sony Cybershot to them every couple of months for cleaning. We bought the extended warranty and anytime cleaning package, so I tend to take advantage of it. I drag the unit in the timber for deer season, turkey season and all over in the boat. They rip it clear open and check it over pretty good.

Might be $50 or so, but could be worth it....

when it first happened!

As a general rule, with anything electronic like cameras, if they get wet, shake off the excess water and then get them into the oven at like 150 to 200 degrees -- warm enough to really drive the water out, cool enough that any thermoplastics don't melt. Leave 'em there a good 6+ hours, overnight is fine. Last couple things I've done (I wear pagers/cell phones...and have multiple ponds on property) have come out OK.

That was advise I got many years ago from Bell Atlantic when I brought them a cell phone, I've used for other stuff since. Get it into the oven ASAP -- the longer the water is in there, the greater the corrosion to wires & connections & such.

Never did a camera, so I don't know if they're more heat sensitive, but v. almost certain loss otherwise I'd risk it, but at the lower end of that temperature scale.

If we're suspecting it's just water between the lenses, this would drive out any residual.

My fear in this case is you've had a deposit of minerals, etc from the water onto the lenses -- that probably would've happened with my method, too though.

Give these folks a call and see what they can do. I have had several 35 mm cameras repaired by them and highly recommend them. If it is fixable they will tell you ,if not they will do the same and not BS you. The company is Morgantown Camera and Video Repair in WV. Really nice folks.

Radio Shack has a budget electronic repair department. Maybe worth a few bucks to have them look at it.

Not likely fixable in reply to lenray, 09-11-2004 12:22:39
The lens in your camera is really a series of lenses that move when you zoom. Most likely water (& whatever) got into that space and is on the internal lens surfaces. Those are in very critial alignment so even if you got it apart, it is really unlikely you could get it back together.

Live with it or give the camera to a kid to play with.

This is one where you have to be real careful. I am guessing that you think the back of the lens is dirty. The case will have to be removed (small #0 or 00 Phillips screws and watch the wiring. Can't help much more. Never had that model apart.
