Question, can pressure treated wood be painted? Have some PT wood under steel cellar doors as the framing, and wife says the wood looks ugly under them and wants them painted. I don't think the paint will adhere, am I wrong?

Lay it out on saw horses and let sun bake it, to remove all moisture then prime good and use a quality paint like sears dura bond best paint I have ever used.

All my tongues on my high wheel wagons and threshing machines, and horse drawen bobsled are pressure treated lumber. I put on 2 or 3 coats of Rust-oleum primer and 2 or 3 coats of Rust-oleum oil base red, some are 6yr. old paint jobs, and look show ready today. Maybe I'm just lucky? But I have never had a problem.....

PS No I not a Rust-oleum dealer...

Yes you can paint treated wood. The moisture level must be below 12%. (Just wait about 6 months). Paint with an oil based primer or the paint WILL peel off. Sherwin Williams A-100 oil based primer is the best. Then paint with two coats of top quality paint. I recommend Sherwin Williams Superpaint.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I used to work for Sherwin Williams... :)

Been a builder for 35 years + and I would not paint treated wood if it is outside as it will build up and peel. I would use a transperant stain. If it is for an inside situation then you can paint due to peeling not being to much of a problem. Painting a deck for example is bad due to the unpainted areas of the wood that allows moisture to still get into the wood and thus peeling. Before painting you should wait till the wood is very dry even for inside or staining.

I used to work for a building center. We were always told to tell the customers that the treated lumber should be left to dry and weather for 1 yr before painting it.

I used alkyd stain, Sherwyn williams brand mixed to the color I wanted and it worked better than latex. Seemed to soak in the wood. It does dry a little slower however. More like oil base paint. If I remember correctly they use a base white for all color mixes. Was about 20$ a gallon. Dont know if they mix qts or not as I needed 3 gallon. A good qualified paint rep or paint store should be able to give you the right info on the right paint. Aged wood, the paint adheres better. Thats what the guy told me.

TR,

I am no expert on this subject but I have a porch with pressure treated posts on it and I painted them white with latex house paint. Then the green leaked through so I painted them again and a little more green leaked through. To make a long story short, I have painted them 4 times and they are now white. I would say that you can paint them but they will not look "great" I think some people use stain for PT.

Hope this helps you.

Joe

It can be painted but requires special primer (depends on the exact paint you want to use). Ask at your HD or hardware store. They need to know what type PT it is... the wood will be green or brown.
