My 2002 Dodge pick up's A/C works great at freeway speed, but blows hot air when slow or stopped... Bought a A/C guage and it reads in the red zone... instructions say to take it in for repair... anyone know what the problem most likely is..? If I have to take it in I don't want to get ripped off...!

Hate to sound like a broken record. Yes there were TSB's on some 2002 dodge P/U's on the A/C. A TSB is not always listed as a recall. Go ask the dealer. He will see if it apply's to yours. If so they might just fix it for you or do so as a good will gesture. Maybe even cut you a little slack. I dont know what guages you used, but you need someone with all the -right- tools and equip. They can possibly tell you the problem right up front with no guessing. A/C systems can be dangerous to your health and well being. These are not for trial and error methods. Dont throw parts at something it dont need. Good luck.

You will find a list of TSB's here, and much more for Dodge trucks.

Lester,

Just for clarification.

When you say you "bought an A/C gauge", is this a true set of A/C gauges with the manifold? Or, just a simple little gauge that is reading the low or hi side only?

If you are working in a tight, closed area without much air movement, that high side is going to show a bit high..... sometimes as high as 350 to 365 lbs if it is real hot and humid.

Again, this is a reading that is pointing to 'no air movement' across that condenser because of your closed surroundings.

However, under normal conditions and with everything working as it shold, low side should read somewhere in the 40's and the high side will show usually around 250 to 275 lbs depending on the day.

But, if that high side is bumping up around 400 lbs, shut 'er down before it reaches the pop-off point.

Just didn't want to lead you astray, Allan

Hi Allen,

The guage I bought was designed to measure the low side of the system... the instructions match what you say, in that the reading should be in the 40's... it measures 65 with the compressor disengaged and 100+ when the copressor is engaged... so the instructions say to simply take it in to be repaired... however, I think that maybe it's the condensor fan... it's electric and it's not running... I've checked it at various times, and It appears to not be running ever... So I'm guessing some kind of relay, a fuse perhaps...? or a bad fan motor...

Lester,

Your head pressure is too high. Usually caused by not enough air across that condenser or the condenser could be plugged with bugs.

The pop-off will blow at about 400+ lbs, so I'd take 'er in and get it fixed. Maybe just a bad fan clutch.

Allan

I know there was a recall around your model year. It had something to do with what your problem is. Check with your dealer, to see if yours is covered by that recall.

As previously mentioned by other poster, you are probably low on refrigerant. Half pound will make a difference on these units. If it is low, that usually means there is a leak some where in the system. Could be a pin hole in the unit in front of radiator, hose, fitting or O ring seal,or possibly a compressor seal. It should be checked for a leak. As it will get progressively worse with time. A leak test does not take anymore than about 30 min, with proper equip. half hour labor for an add refrigerant and leak test.

I put a pressure guage from a re-charge kit on it and it measured HIGH... per the instructions that means it's not low on 134... perhaps the reading is wrong or I'm missunderstanding the directions...

Have you checked your refridgerant charge? Sound like my truck, car, and tractor does when low on 134. My trucks an '01 and I needed a pound this spring.

Just had my 2001 Dodge in for A/C service. A/C worked great on the road, but as I came to a stop, I heard a flap close & Hot air came out . Turning it off & then back on got cold air again, til the next stop or bump in the road. Took it in the Day before warranty ran out, turned out it was a broken actuator cam in the mixing box under the dash. I understand it is a common problem on Dodge Pickups. Works great now.... Shouldn't truck still be under warranty ?? Hope this helps.. Davis

Haven't noticed the air getting warmer after bumps... only at stops... is there any way to check this "cam" without taking it into the dealer..?

Dealership did it in shop, so I was not able to watch..... .. first visit , they did not have part, so I had to go back a few days later. Then It only took a short while to fix, so it must be easy to get to. I assume it is a panel you can remove from the cab side. Does yours switch from cold to hot almost instantly ?? Mine did... Also a sound of flap closing as it happened. Davis

I certainly will... So far I think that I have figured it out... hopefully...

I tested the connection to the condensor fan motor and it tested good 12v... so I know that the motor is getting power, I also located the relay and and swapped it out with another and the fan still wouldn't run... I then hooked up the fan motor directly to 12v, still nothing... I even tested the motor with an ohmmeter and it didn't show continuity... so I have ordered a new motor from the Dodge dealer... 98 bucks... and 2 days to get it... much easier than fnding a wrecked one anf going to it and pulling it out... Hopefully this will fix the problem... which I have to thank all that have responded... without their help I can only imagine what the dealer would be charging me to fix this... I have the motor out and it took me about an hour... so figure dealer cost 325.00 bucks...? anyway thanks all, and I will let everyone know what the final out come is...

You can get a lot of ideas. None are worth much to you If you are not qualified to work on A/C units, (one mis-cue and you can be in a W.O.S.) you have but one choice have it repaired. Preferbly by a dodge place since it is a dodge. I just spent 600 at a GMC place for my truck repair.
New not rebuilt compressor as I enjoy the A/C in the summer. Money spent for a trial and error situation should be applied to a correct qualified fix. A goodly percentage of the time the dealer will not rip you off, they are not offended by you asking questions and ask for a complete itemized bill, plus you have a warranty on the parts and workmanship. I do know the 70$ an hour labor is hard to swallow.

Make sure you have good air flow across the condensor. Slipping fan clutch, or non working electric fan, if equiped? blockage of any kind? bugs, dirt, trash,?

Just hosed off the condesor... looks clear enough... fan seems to be running... when the compressor kicks in pressure goes up over 100, when it clicks off about 65.... and it makes hissing sound...

Well, that was my best guess. Good luck at the shop. They always find "something extra" that you didnt plan on.

Check the vacuum canister under the hood to see if a line has come off or if it is cracked.

Vacuum canister in the A/C system..? and the hose... it runs from the canister to...? where, a port in the intake manifold..?
