Are you useing the right 7018? 7018 rods are meant to work in a DC welder. If you have an AC welder you need to use 7018AC rods. Regular 7018's will react like that in an AC welder.

Hi Vince,

Double check what electrodes you were using. 1/4" is tops as far as I know in the popular electrodes types and I don't think they ever made a 6018.

7018 is a shallow rod. 6011 is a deep rod. With that said, I use the 7018 for almost everything, but usually don't weld thicker than 1/4.

If you want to weld thick material, Vee it and fill the Vee with 7018 (several passes). Such a clean rod, easy to clean up after. Love it.

Hi Vince. The first thing that comes to mind, when you say 5/16” rod is damn, the second thing is rod oven. See 7018 has an iron powder flux. The rod will work a whole lot better if it has been in a rod oven for a least 24-hours. With out going and getting my AWS books, a good rule of thumb. When you take the rod out of the oven with out a glove, you don’t want to walk very far with it! This is not to say you can’t weld with 7018 if it is not baked, I have poured water out of a can of 7018 and had to use it that way, sure the quality of the weld is in the toilet. But it works better pre heated!
