Slag Trapped in V notch weld

Hello Been having a Problem with some slag getting trapped in a weld in a V notch ,,angle is about 40 - 45 Degrees material is 5/8 and 3/8 mild steel using a 5/32 6013 at 130 amps any suggestions to eliminate this Problem

6013 is not going to work in a V notch weld very well no matter what you do. 7018,7024,7014,6011 would all be a better choice.

My limited experience indicates that the 6013 is very likely to trap slag. The 6011 is a better choice, the 7018 an excellent choice. Both electrodes work better on DC.

10-4 on the DC. Matter of fact, if you wanna use the 7018 on AC you need to get the 7018AC rod. But still not as pretty as DC.

Turn up the heat to 170 amp and close up the arc. 5/32 is to much rod for a novice anyway so use 1/8 and let it work.

Hi Dave,

Using 5/32" 6013 at 130a will guarentee slag inclusions as your just not hot enough. Also hold a close arc length.

To use 5/32" at 130a your having to hold a long arc length thus supplying part of the additional needed heat but that causes slag inclusions as it chills the slag before the weld puddle is completed.

I use 1/8" 6013 at 140a with a tight arc length on AC. I can use a slightly longer arc length using DCEN but with 150a.

Larger diameter elctrodes, over 1/8" in SMAW, .045 Mig is not suggested for the casual user as there's just too many things to watch at one time. Even when I was professional welding 1/8" Chemtron 7018 was my choice for 90% of my welding with the other be 10% 1/8" 6010 Lincoln.

Go to a 7018. Weld for a couple of minutes and stop; clean slag and go again. Pops right off if you hit is while it's still hot.

Amp ratings on welders can vary. The stick welder that I use at work is about 20 amps hotter than my one at home. Example: 90 amps at work equals 110 amps on my welder. That said, on my AC buzzbox at home I consider 130 amps the min. for 5/32 rod. When the heat is right, 6013 slag will peel right off the weld. No need for a chipping hammer, just use a wire brush. Personally I like 6013 rod. Get a practice piece of metal and get the right heat. Run a bead 3 to 4 inches. The slag should lift off the begining of the weld and be holding by one spot where you finished welding. Now with this set, if you have a slag problem in your V notch it will be because of your rod angle. I could give you some other options but I think you can make your weld with 6013, the proper heat and the proper rod angle. LOL

What is Proper rod angle in that case ?? I have used 6013 and and normaly get good results but just this v notch seem to be my only Problem ?? sometimes it comes out fine but other time the bead has a few holes filled with slag? would maybe an 1/8 rod work better maybe down in the V ??

Oh boy, now you want some specifics! I cannot see you slag inclusions so it is hard to tell what is causing them. Remember the acronymn CLAMS. Current, Length of arc, Angle of rod, Movement, and Speed. Doing any one of these wrong can cause slag inclusions. On your first pass the rod should be 90 degrees to the metal and 20 degrees angle toward forward travel. As you make your various passes keep the 20 degrees forward angle,but go 90 degrees from the V angle.
Remember that heat rises so most of your heat should be on the bottom and just a slight upward movement will flow the metal together. Welding is a "touch" thing for me and it"s hard for me to be more specific. Other rods are an option, but if your comfortable with 6013 stick with it. 7018 is a good rod, but it still had slag and if it has moisture it make pourous welds. I may get jumped on by some guys but 6011 penetrates and leaves little slag. But, I still think it is most important for you to chose the rod you are most comfortable with. 6013 will do your job and if your comfortable with it, it gives you the best chance for success. LOL

Hi Dave2pa, I personally always avoided 6013 like the plague. If memory serves, what little I ever ran 6013 I ran it DCSP= electrode holder on the minus lug. DCRP= electrode holder on the + lug. In doing this it seemed to me that I could control the slag more so than on DCRP. I would not use 6013 on 5/8� plate. I think it is primarily a sheet metal rod, but don�t hold me to that. I didn�t even know they made 6013 in the 5/32� size. T_Bone can tell you all you need to know about sheet metal rods.
