Does it hurt a diesel engine to start in (cooler)mornings with a shot of starter fluid directly in intake. Mine knocks a lot at first when I do this.

There was a post in one of the other forums (Farmall I think), from a guy who had no compression in a non-running diesel he bought - found every piston ring in the engine broken into several pieces; he thought the previous owner blew them apart with ether.

It's the kind of thing where less is better.

Ether starts are 'generally' not a good thing, but most everybody does it... when you have to.

One place I worked, if they caught you using ether they'd fire you on the spot.. on the other hand, if you sat around all day because the engine wouldn't start they'd fire you too...

You just learned to look around before you used it..

Is this an regular event ? If it is, and it's practical to do so you might consider a block heater or... ?

Not knowing what kind of diesel you've got, that idea in the other post about talking to local shop or mechanic that services your type of engine is a good idea.

ether injection is equiped on some equipment to aid in cold weather starting. the thing you want to keep in mind is engine should be 'TURNING' while ether is being applied. and use only minimum amount.

When I worked for a IH dealer in the early 80's, they recomended using either if it would not start without. Better than cranking forever and washing the cylinders down with fuel. The exception would be with glow plugs. Do not use it if you are using glow plugs. I think it kind of burns them out.A small shot in the intake does not hurt, but it will make it ratle for a few seconds.

Depends a lot on WHICH diesel engine. On newer ones with pre-combustion chambers or glow plugs, my understanding is that yes, it's bad for 'em.

With older diesels (say 1970 and earlier, as a guess) you may not get them to start without it.

Best advice would be so discuss it with a local diesel mechanic based on the type, make and age of engine you're talking about.

About ether, don't use it with glow plugs, glow plugs will ignite it immediately, even with the engine not cranking. If you must use with glow plugs, crank engine and continue cranking until the glow plugs time out, and continue cranking while you inject the ether. If you stop cranking, the glow plugs will activite when you start cranking again. With my F350, I've disabled the glow plug controler and successfully used ether.
