We use 1/16th" dualshield at work mostly. R3S 400 and old bullet style 600 amp Lincolns. I have a R3S 400 here at home too and am looking to probably switch to a single phase rig instead. How big of solid wire(non-dualshield) can an appropriate size mig run well? I want some good power that can leave a good finish quality. I'm not impressed with the weld finish with the .045 out of the Miller 2?? we also run. I'll probably die a Lincoln man. Always have had better luck with them for various reasons. Loren

Hey Loren, you said your looking to maybe switch to a single phase machine, and your wondering how big of a wire you can run. I know you said your a Lincoln man but if you can find you a Miller Maxtron 450 it'll do either single or three phase. We have one right now set up on 240 single phase, and like this it's rated at 350 amps at a 100% duty cycle. On three phase it'll do 450 at 100% and I believe 550 at 60%. We're currently running a .052 Er70-S6 wire on it with a 98% Argon/2% Oxygen mix. We have a machine torch setup that we use for building up shafts, rollers, etc that we hook it to as well as doing hand work when the machine rig won't work. As long as you get everything set right it leaves a beautiful bead. Too the weld is tough yet still easily machinable. We've built up house rollers, bottom rollers, and fairlead sheaves for the cranes we work on and have never had a problem with any of them wearing prematurely. As for being a reliable machine, last summer I was building up 4" wide bottom rollers that had to be 14"OD. I was putting on over 3/4 inch of weld on each roller without stopping, and doing about 4 a day. The welder was running at maybe 90% duty cycle about at 300 amps for close to 10 hours a day for nearly a week with nary a problem. We're feeding it with a 500lb drum so I didn't stop unless I absolutely had to, and that was usually to change a tip that had gotten messed up for whatever reason. There was just a Maxtron 450 listed on Ebay along with a S-64 feeder and extra feeder parts for dirt cheap, but it was in KY and the guy wouldn't ship. Good luck finding you another machine.

Hi Loren,

Well you should be able to use upto 5/64" solid wire as you would be at peak amps on your machine. In reality about 1/16" manual Mig as the torch gets hard to control at about 275amps and it gets warm.

They do make a liquid cooled torch that would solve that problem but most of all of the 1/16" machines that I've seen are either semi automatic or fully automatic. Not to say that you can't manual Mig the larger diameter electrodes but just the companys I work for were set up for automatic orperation.

You didn't give us alot to go on of why your disappointed on using .045. Type of electrode, base metal, joint design, cover gas and flow, position welded or rotated, joint prep, would let us know more about the reason why.

Hey Loren, I'm with youse guys when it comes to Lincoln! Because I'm on single phase I use Lincoln Invertec V350's and LN-7 feeders, with power to spare! Just love them Lincolns.

Hi Loren. I too have run the R3S machines in the past. Great machines. The LN-7, 8, and 9 are almost bullet proof! I�m not sure if I seen a single phase machine that will get you the amps and volts you are looking for to run 1/16� solid wire. Tried to go on Lincoln�s web site, but it is down right now! I bought a Linde 208 amp Mig welder in an auction last year really good deal $300.00 Local welding supply told me I can run 1/16� wire with it, said Linde was notorious for under rating their machines. Have not run 1/16� with it yet, but it just screams with .045 bare wire. Really don�t see how your not getting a good looking weld with .045 wire, maybe try switching to 75 / 25 gas I always thought the welds look better, than with straight CO2, but that�s just me. I have to agree with you on the Lincoln welders. I have used hundreds of Miller welders, have owned them in the past and have a Miller Gold Star in the shop as I type, something about Lincoln power! Got-a-love it

Hi T_Bone, sorry it took so long to get back to you. We took the horses up to the north end of the county for a trail ride. Did you ever get any horses? You know I�m sure not impressed with that F-550 with the new 6.0 diesel, but I�m not a diesel person, always had BIG BLOCKS. Far as your question, you�re kidding right? Mix my own gas; I still have trouble with the chain saws and outboards, LOL. No I always use premix gas. I don�t do enough welding any more to even say I weld at all. Last project I did was build that flatbed dump, with the metal art in the head ache rack. Regards!

Na I had to see too many Doctors last winter and it set me back a year. I'm going to try this year. I'm still looking at the Tennesse Walkers. did you have fun on your trip?

Geezs buy a new truck and your already complaining...LOL Ok spill it and tell me whats wrong. Did you try the 1/2qt ATF type F per 50gal like I suggested?

Hi T_Bone. Tennessee Walkers, well if you cast a shadow like I do, you will need a stepladder to get up on one of those things, HA! Trucks, as you know this is the first diesel I�ve ever owned. Had a couple company ones, but only for very short periods. The throttle seems very slow to respond not like big blocks. I bought a new 3-horse trailer awhile back, (3,200#) 2-horses (2,250#) Tack+ Crap (750#) Truck weighs (12,000#) wet, grand total (18,200#) Going over to Eastern Washington for a trail ride Climbing up Snoqualmie pass, something like 5-6 % grade. I was trying to keep up with my buddy in his �-ton Dodge with the Cummins pulling the same trailer, but with 3-horses. Now his Dodge doesn�t weigh near as mush as my Ford. Anyway I�m sure the Ford was in 4th gear, I was watching the AIC when (I think) the truck dropped to 3rd gear, and the RPM�s went to 3,400. Just as the thought crossed my mind to back out of it, KABOOM! I told the wife must have blown the engine but it only had 1,600 miles on it. All the gauges were fine. Lost all power, barely made it over to the shoulder. Soon As I opened the door I knew what it was, (learned a lot on the dieselstop forum, thanks for that info.) the intercooler hose had blown off. No clamp, must be on freeway somewhere. Used tie wire, which lasted 2.3 seconds. Next time under the hood found the factory clamp laying on top the engine. This clamp came off a total of 6-times on the trip. Took it to the local dealer, they replaced it with Fords latest & greatest fix, (yeah right) I asked the mechanic about me using 3-inch exhaust clamps and small turn buckles to hold the intercooler hose to the turbo, and the intercooler. He thought it was a good idea. Posted this on the dieselstop, I guess this is a real big problem Ford has. Some say they had the same problem with their 7.3. Have you ever had this problem with yours? Just not happy with the power, maybe a little bruised ego, because I can�t out run that Dodge! Now refresh my memory about the ATF, must have forgot that! Do that a lot now a days, LOL. Oh, mileage, went to Eastern Washington to get hay awhile back, only 600 miles on the truck at that time. 11.9? going over empty, 8.89 coming back with 4-tons of hay. Ouch, but better than that old 454. Regards.

Hi Tony,

Well I've got good news and bad news :)

Good news is if you and your buddy were pulling another 10,000lbs then you would be walking away from him because of your lower gearing.

Bad news is He spanked your butt because your too low geared for your power to weight ratio. You had to drop out of OD, he did too, but with your 4:88 ? when you drop into driect drive 1:1 then your all high RPM.

Your buddy has 3:73/4:10 and has close the same power to weight ratio but higher gears therefor more top speed at a lower RPM than you do.

Add the 10000lbs and your buddy would looking at your tail lites.

Your innercooler tube could have blown off from over boost as at 3400rpm should yeild about 28psi to 30psi of boost. Is the 6.0 still waste gated? I can't remember but if it isn't then you best double clamp the hoses as it will happen again. If waste gated then have the shop check on the relief setting of the waste gate as the 7.3 is set at 25psi.

I also seam to remember reading about a scuffing of the innerpipe coupling that helped along with a glue?. You might want to research this more.

I don't have a problem with my 7.3 PSD blowing innnercooler hoses as I use maximum torque RPM or 1600rpm for pulling loads. I get 14.1mpg pulling 16,000 GCW with this method, recent AZ to Co trip. On a 7% grade that means approx 42mph. In any event I don't exceed maximum peak HP RPM, 2800rpm while pulling near maximum GCWR.

I just did my 15,000 mile life time mileage of 17.2mpg average. Thats with 6000miles pulling 16,000 GCW :) :) Not bad for a F350 DRW!

My son just bought a new 04.5 CDT-600, 4:10, 6spd CC , Swb, SWR. On my test road I held a steady fuel pedal (didn't add fuel while on the grade) at 55mph on the flats and while climbing a small 4% grade.

At the top His Cummins was at 51mph, where as my 7.3, 6spd with a 3:73 ratio was at 50mph. That told me we both would drop out of OD while climbing a 7% grade with being close too GCWR. He would drop out slightly latter on the grade but I would travel slightly faster on the 7% but we're splitting hairs here as there both very close. I was expecting the CTD to top out at 55mph or very close too it.

What shocked me was the low end torque increase of the 4:10 ratio. A very noticeable difference than my 3:73. The CTD has 80ft/lbs of torque over my 7.3.

Hi T_Bone. Thanks for the info. I printed it out so I can show that buddy of mine. We have this competition thing going on. I bought a 26 hp John Deere; he went out and bought a 32 hp Kubota. He almost fell over when I drove in his driveway with that F-550, but now he has that little grin on his face. I�m sure I have mentioned this guy to you in the past; he worked as a crane operator for me for years! If we were still working I would assign him to some old beat up American crawler crane with no windows, LOL. His Dodge does have the 4:10, with the 4-speed auto, 235 hp. I understand Cummins has 325 hp now! It seems to me I read on the dieselstop, that the 6.0 does not have a waste gate, I�ll have to research this more. My buddy also suggested using Caterpillar�s glue to hold the flex hoses in position. Hey, now you forgot to explain the ATF, or, are you just punishing me for forgetting in the first place. :) I see you figured it out that TonyD was me, someone took my old handle, Thanks BUCK!

Hi Tony,

Something you might try is to back out off the fuel pedal and stay in OD longer if thats possible. You might also consider a US Gear OD unit to give you a double OD. See that 6spd would have worked better since your "racing" as you could have held OD longer. I personally wouldn't be running higher than maximum peak HP design as your engine and drive train componets won't last.

AFT type F lubes the injectors, alot! It cut my injector noise by 1/3. ATF has been used as a injector lube for the past 50yrs that I know of.

Hi T_Bone. I think the big thing is I just don�t know how to drive it yet. I need to play with it more and find the peak power point. Seems like I read somewhere that the 6.0 has a certain RPM range that is the highest hp output. I think we discussed this last spring when I was trying to decide between the 6.0 and the V-10. I also think we agreed the 4:88 were to low, and would put the truck up and over it�s peak hp output, but was the highest gear Ford offered in the 550. I just ordered a set of gauges for it. A pyrometer, boost, and transmission temp. I�ll have to research on the dieselstop what the best ranges to stay in. Thanks again for all your help:)
