I have a number of large sheets of the plastic used in replacing broken window glass. What is the best way of cutting this so it does not splinter and crack?

The local plastic shop uses a table saw, but I don't know what kind of blade is used. Maybe a special one for plastic. Call a nearby sheet plastic supplier and ask.

MOST PLACES THAT SELL PLEXIGLASS SHOULD ALSO SELL THE CUTTER MADE FOR THIS. I HAVE HAD ONE FOR YEARS AND IT WORKS WELL. ITS BEST TO USE A STRAIGHT EDGE AND GO OVER THE SCORED AREA SEVERAL TIMES. AS MENTIONED PLACE ALONG AHARD STRAIGHT SURFACE AND SNAP. WITH REGULAR GLASS A CUTTER IN GOOD CONDITION IS A MUST. ALSO USE A LITTLE LIGHT OIL IN A SMALL CONTAINER TO DIP THE CUTTER IN BEFORE EACH CUT. STEADY EVEN PRESSURE FOR THE FULL LENGTH OF THE CUT AND ONLY GO OVER IT ONE TIME. IT WILL HAVE A TENDENCY TO SPLINTER IF YOU MAKE MORE THAN ONE PASS. AGAIN PLACE ON A STRAIGHT SURFACE AND SNAP. IF CUTTING IRREGULAR SHAPES OUT OF GLASS MAKE GOUR CUT THEN LIFT THE PANE SLIGHTLY AND TAP IT LIGHTLY FROM THE BACK SIDE OF THE CUT WITH THE BALL END OF THE CUTTER THATS WHAT ITS FOR. THIS HAS WORKED WELL FOR ME IN THE PAST EVEN SO THE PROS BREAK ONE NOW AND THEN.

I got to be the poorest when it comes to cutting glass or plexiglass. Guy at lumber yard just scribes either kind and snaps it. Looks sooo easy. He says the reason I cant cut any kind of glass is cause I am scared of breaking it.( I am).. Anyhow I band saw smaller pieces of the plexi stuff.

Sawing it with power saws usually does NOT work. The blade tends to heat the plastic along the cut and leaves a ragged, melted edge. I've tried most all kinds of saws, all work poorly - table saws, jig saws, scroll saws, you name it! Only time I had any success was with a hollow ground saber saw blade, moving very slowly and carefully. Suggest you try some other techniques, as suggested by other posts here!

"Score and break" works well on Plexiglass as long as you can bend along the ENTIRE score line in one motion.

Lexan doesn't work as well with S&B, but it will work on the thinner stuff.

Personally, I use a bandsaw whenever I can. Leave the protective paper or film on while cutting.

Jigsaw will work with a fine blade and some patience. Too fine a blade or too slow of a feed and it'll weld back together behind the blade. Too agressive or too fast of a feed, and it'll chip or crack.

i have scored it with a razor utility knife and just break over at the score mark. usually breaks clean and then use an old file to clean up the sharp edges.

I've seen the lumber yards score it with a utility knife and the just bend it across an edge. If the cut edge will be exposed run a propane torch along it to remove any sharp edges.

I always use my table saw and it cuts plexi-glass fine. Just have to feed it slowly. Then again, I'm using a Panel (plywood) blade to cut the plexiglass. I've also used my router with a fluted straight 1/4" bit. Router cuts it REAL smooth but can be a handful if not experienced.
