I'm having problems finding copper clad
carbon pencils for brazing, anyone know a good source. I suspect that since the advent of MIG
sellers are becoming fewer.

What you are describing sounds an awful lot like the carbon electrodes that are still used in carbon arc followspots in the entertainment industry. The major supplier of carbon arc followspots was Strong Electric, they still provide service and parts for these units and I am sure you can still purchase the rods. Check out Strong Electric on the web, also major theatre supply houses should still be able to get them.

I just dug out an old box of them, the address on the box is: Union Carbide, Carbon Products Division, New York, NY

UCAR Arc Carbons-Suprex Positive
Catalog number LO521, (could be a zero instead of an o) 7mm x 12"

good luck

Hi Abe, You should be able to get them through any welding supply company as there used for air carbon arc gouging & cutting and welding galv sheet metal with everdur filler rod.

What diameters are available? I use these a lot to place in an egged out hole to weld around. I would really like a source of 1/2 inch diameter.
( Unless you have a better idea for welding up these worn out holes?)

Hi Truck,
We have the following sizes in stock and when the main office opens, I'll call and find out about additional ones. 1/8"--5/32"--3/16"--1/4"--5/16"--3/8".

I have also used graphite in the past when I wanted something that would conduct electricity. It too can be machined into whatever shape you want.

I have also drilled holes oversized (Especially on castings where the HAZ of the casting would be too hard to drill due to carbide precipitation.)and sprayed pure metal (Ni Si B alloy)into them and then drilled them back to original dimensions.
