...just got home from an auction. Managed to snag an old stihl 041 chainsaw. It turned over with boatloads of compression. Got it home she fired right up. I shut it off pretty quick. I would like to "tune up" and oil a little, before heading to the bush. Looking for any suggestions. Thanks. Hound

Those 041s are notorious for vibrating the screws loose and deteriorated rubber parts. Check the rubbers real well so that you don`t lean sieze your new saw because of an air leak and while you`re at it, you might as well replace both in-tank filters and the air filter probably is shot as well. Parts are getting harder to find for this model so you might want to get it tip top right now, while you still can.

In addition to what Mac said, lose the fuel and refill with fresh. I'd also at least check the air filter if not replace it. Unless you know what to look for on the chain in terms of a proper sharpening, I'd replace the chain too. If it wants to cut at an angle, the chain and/or bar are toast.

Pulse hose, fuel hose and filter, sparkplug. Check intake gaskets (3) under carburetor. Check inlet screen and lever height. Sharpen. Then smile as it melts through the wood.

The first thing you should do is go buy a pair of chaisaw chaps, and wear them. You said saw started right up, ok take bar and chain of and clean runner and oil holes in bar. Dump oil res. and wash out if it needs it . fill with oil and start saw with fresh gas. Run at half speed and oil will come out supply hole .Ok oiler works put together and file with holder and right size file and run the hell out of it, then adjust carb.Chances are it will work well, and don't sink alot fo money into it.
