Hi Kurt,

I was reading thru the archives and found a refference to you building a wood chipper winter before last.

How did that project turn out?

How well does it work comparred to the commerical made?

Anything you would do different?

I only need to chip some 1" and smaller stuff most of the time and throw in some short 3" half split pieces the other part of the time. I need it for my garden compost, about 4yds per year.

Can"t make up my mind to make one or just buy a Troy Bilt 7hp for $600 delivered.

T-Bone,I read about one 10yr ago in Mother Earth News. They took a self propeled mower(front wheel drive)built a feed chute and ran a paddle wheel feeder from the drive to the chute(cut a hole in the deck and turn the blade upside down)wood in the top and chips out the bottem.

Wow, I didnt think you could archive back that far. Yes I made a small wood chipper, 13 HP engine. Yes It is complete, pretty much, not enough guards on it though. It cost me $850 for it, I would have been better off renting a chipper for $850 for a week, My neighbor has a large 100HP+ diesel that he bought a year ago and it will eat a 10"diam. tree in no time trunk, branches and all. My chipper is for small sticks and stuff, I also get a burn barrel going just to keep it going fast. In my opinion you are better off taking the sticks and torching them with some diesel fuel, just make a large pile and light em up. I was somewhat board a year and half ago and decided to make my chipper to see if I could do it and it does work but probably not as good as a 13 hp that you would buy from somewhere. But the good thing is that I can unbolt the 13hp briggs engine easily and put it on my Bolens tractor. I bought the 13hp briggs from small engine warehouse in Indiana. www.smallenginewarehouse.com. A few people laughed at me after I made it but screw em, its my money and my time, beats getting drunk with the $850. The biggest material mine will take is about 1.5" diameter without stopping the flywheel. It works well for small sticks and stuff. See ya.

Hi Kurt,

Ya you can find stuff back to about 1998 and even then alot of info is lost. I think from a HDD crash. You can also use the "archives" button on the top of the page to search via topic, user or keyword.

Your neighbor must not have a fireplace? 10" should make a few noises when it grinds...lol

I ended up just ordering a Troy-Bilt, 6.5hp, rated 3" (ya right) for $574 delivered to the house. It should do my 1" stuff and my garden scraps at the end of the season. I also use wheat straw in the mix so that will be a big help with the discharge bag.

I got to thinking I have to many projects to complete to get into building anything extra. For as simple as a chipper looks it"s a shame to spend the same money on a smaller machine.

Thanks for the interesting read on your project!

If I had more money I would have bought a 25HP Kohler engine and made a medium sized one with a 80LB. flywheel instead of a 25lb. flywheel. Oh well, I almost made a log splitter instead but my neighbor made one of those. Real nice one too, tow behind, 11Briggs and Scrapiron engine, electric start, 5" bore cylinder.

Taking you in a different direction...but it maybe a source for cheap if not free bark mulch and sawdust.
If you have a saw mill near by you may ask what they do with there stuff. I run a portable mill and can generate up to a yard of sawdust, bark, mulch pretty quickily and I give it away. Drive up in a truck and I'll load you up. If theres a mill near by may want to ask them.

You are one heck of a nice guy. We have a sawmill here that leaves slabs for the folks who otherwise can't afford firewood. It's messy, but it's free.

Hi BOO,

I gotta agree that both guys are very generous. Too bad your not close by.

Where I get my firewood is a freebie. They make potting soil mix and use the bark but have to buy log ends to get the bark. I get the logs they get the bark

I think we only have a couple saw mills running in the state, AZ. I"d have to check that out.
