Used to be zinc chromate as the primer. The use of zinc chromate virtually disappeared from use because of the word chromate. Zinc chromate is still available to commercial users but not over the counter. Most painters do not want the hassle of chrome bearing waste disposal.

I have heard people use epoxy primer but stainless is not on the list of substrates it should be be used over. I don't know what the replacement is if any. but i will try and find out. If you just paint it without etching, then the proper primer, it will eventually peel off.

There are self etching primers you can use on SS. Will this be a project sprayed with a gun or do you just need a spray can? I can give you a brand if you tell me what you need. Brushing is out, these primers are available mixed for spraying or in spray cans.

If I remember correctly..... we used zinc chromate for the base primer on stainless steel aircraft parts before finishing with enamels. HTH
