Help have got a problem with our old 523. We have just fitted a new hydraulic pump and now have another problem , we have noticed there is water getting into the engine oil. Has this anything to do with fitting the new pump or perhaps revving it hard to try to make the hydraulics work before we dont know any suggestions.
By the way its not a bit of water its a lot.
We have drained the engine oil but for every litre of water put in itcomes out imediatly out of the sump plug.
many thanks

Nicole, If you have the diesel as T-bone says the D179 is the german engine and has wet liners and they will leak. 544 tractor uses the 4 cyl version of the same engine, had one of those in early this summer with the same problem , pour water in the radiator and catch it comming out the bottom . Liners seals were leaking.

Hi nicole,

The USAversion is a IH 454, D179 3cyl if diesel and came in gas. I took a quick look thru the IH CD but didn"t see anything that jumped out. Not a related problem.

Time to see a mechanic and buy a set of owners manuals. The IH-CD is a good investment as it"ll show you the parts break down with part numbers.

If your going to look futher on the net, be sure and post the serial number begining as that will tell what came on the engine/tractor from the factory.

Nicole, Looked thru my engine parts books, don"t see that tractor listed so I don"t know which engine is in it . From the description of the problem , I would think it"s a wet liner engine with one of the sleeve seals leaking or possibly a perferated liner.

The short answer is that the block or head is cracked, most likely the block. The engine will have to come apart to determine if it's still usable.

Nope the head and block are fine, any other ideas?
Are there any internal water pipes that could have come loose or anything like that?
thanks
nicole

You have a cracked head, cracked block, bad sleeve, or if they are wet sleeves, a bad o-ring at the bottom. Remove the oil pan, add water and see where it is coming from. There are no "pipes".

Or, if you're lucky, a bad head gasket.

What makes you think they "are fine"? Have you pulled the pan and then poured water into radiator? If you haven't, then your assertion that they "are fine" is wishful thinking. If you had, the location of the damage will be obvious.

Hello Nicole. Been 12 or so years since I worked on those tractors. If my thinking serves me correctly that engine has a sleeve in the head where the the injector is clamped into. Very possibley could be the problem. That or the wet sleeve O'rings on the sleeves. The other possibility would be the head gasket as the sleeves are adjoining in the block and they are open at that juncture as you will see after removing the head. Hope it doesn't ruin your day completely, but that is all I can come up with at present. Good luck.
