I know it varies, but what would a good average cost of the following concrete work be per sq ft?

Brother in law is wanting to put a 4" floor in an exsisting 20x40 building. Currently dirt floor, has concrete footers all the way around.

Would need to remove a bit of dirt, add a bit of gravel, set rebar, & pour & finish slab floor. BiL has zero time to help, would be a total hire job. Probably vapor barrier, no real need to insulate as this will never be insulated shed, just cold storage.

I think 5" might be better in Minnesota, but not my shed. Just curious what costs run.

I charge $3.25 per sq. ft. This includes all labor, prep, forming, pour and finish, concrete and sealer. This is a prety common price in Central IL.

Tips on Buying Concrete in reply to paul, 08-22-2004 12:47:54
You may want to check prices for higher PSI concrete and additives, such as embedded fibers. You may be able to reduce the thickness of the slab by increasing the quality of the concrete. 4000psi concrete is pretty common. Upgrading to 6000psi concrete may cost a couple bucks a yard, but may save in the number of yards needed.

Also, talk to some one-horse concrete contractors. There is a big difference between homeowner's costs for concrete and contractor prices. If you order enough concrete, you could get into contractor's prices.

Four inch thick floor, you'll get 81 square feet covered per yard of concrete. Current local price is $80 per yard, plus fuel surcharge, plus outrageous small load charge for under 5 yards. Couple neighbors do flat work, walls, etc. and usual final cost is 2.25-2.5 times the cost of concrete. That includes forming, finishing, etc. Your BIL project is pretty straight forward, no forming, just need some stakes and grade pipes.

Think I had the shed dimensions a bit wrong, 30 x 60. Will be about 22-23 yards. As Dan K said, I gave BiL a couple of local small contractor phone numbers. Will be interesting to see how it works out.

$70 per yard for concrete, $70 per yard to finish, plus mesh and rebar. 2 months ago next door neighbor had 150 yards put in a new feeding shed. Spent about $17500 for the floor.

Word is out that concrete prices are going up as of 9/1/04. Estimates by suppliers are in the $4 to $5 per yard increase range.

not sure but that may be the annual rise that happens every year when they start to add calcium to keep it from freezing

I heard of the China scare. Last headline was steel. The companies had a field day with it and so did Wall Street.

Hope some police group is watching this closely. Talked to a Chinese exchange student taking economics, she said in China it's all news to them.

In 2000 I put up a 22X50 garage, with concrete footers. The flat work was as follows, Concrete cost, which I paid the crete drivers $1,000 (3500psi mix 5.5 bag) and $950 (cash to the workers) It took 3 guys 7 hours to scrape the sand base flat and put down steel mesh pour about 15ydrs of crete and trowel it smooth on knee boards.

Here in the Twin Cities you can get it done for 7-8 dollars per square foot. Next problem is finding someone to do it. I end up pouring alot myself because with the booming construction activity around here the contractors I usually use get too busy.
