Please help me drill out a �� NPT hole in the rear housing of my 806. I need to drill out and rethread to 1� NPT or NPS.

I don�t have this tap, so as I was looking through the McMaster-Carr catalog, I see they have a Pipe Reamer for NPT in 1� (pg 2167). Can I just ream the existing hole to 1�, or do I drill, ream then tap? Or they also have NPS taps in 1�(pg 2084) that can be used in low PSI conditions, which this is, as it�s the suction line going to a pump. What size drills do I need for these application, I can�t find a reference guide for pipe threads this size?

How would you do this, and what would be the easiest way and safest (don�t want to make a mistake and hurt Casting). Remember this is the rear end drain plug that I am talking about so laying on the ground under the Tractor is part of the job. I have drilled and taped many holes in steel and have cleaned NPT fittings in cast but never drilled and taped a new hole in cast, what do I need to know?

I would go with Jet9n's idea of a machined fitting. If it doesn't work you're only out $2-3. And if it does work, you will save lots of money and work, not to mention possible medical bills. I was under a pickup drilling a 1/2" hole for a trailer hitch and the bit jammed, twisting the drill and giving me a trip to the ER and 6 stitches in the wrist. I had a friend finish the holes, this time with me holding a 3' length of pipe mounted in the auxillilary handle hole; no more twisted drill motors. But if you still want to enlarge the 3/4" hole to 1", here's some info: Taper pipe reamers, tapered 3/4" per foot for reaming holes to be tapped with standard taper pipe taps. 1" size, large end, 1+13/16", small end, 1+3/32". Flute length 1+3/4". Import price (2000),$40. US made, $100.

Taper pipe drill sizes: 1/4" pipe, use 7/16 drill.
3/8" pipe, use 9/16 drill.
1/2" pipe, use 45/64 drill.
3/4" pipe, use 29/32 drill.
1" pipe, use 1+9/64 drill.

Chart does not state whether these holes are to be tapered first, or tapped as is.
In a one chance situation, it's always best to practice on some like kind scrap material first.

I tend to agree with the posts below that a short
restriction to 3/4 would not be an issue, but I
would use a "Machined street ell and adapter" to
go to 1". The "machined fitting has a larger hole
than a common schedule pipe fitting.

First thing I"d do is to take the 3/4" plug out and stick my finger up in there and see if theres enough meat to open the threads up to 1" NPT...and nothing in the path of the twist drill to grab the drill and break it and make you go inside hunting the remains of the drill. Also, you might want to magnetize the drill and tap so the shavings stick to them and you can blow them off with an air hose toward your grape arbor or roses...(cast iron shavings are good for them both). To keep the twist drill from grabbing as it goes through the other end of the hole...grind a flat across the face of both cutting lips 1/64 to 1/32"...in other words eliminate the rake that makes a drill want to pull into the drilled metal...makes you have to push harder but it won"t grab and dig in. If there isn"t enough meat left after you drill out to tap drill size...you might have to cut an oversized piece off of a steel differential and weld it on...if you"re a real good welder and know the metals well. What size is the suction port on your pump?
That is the size hole you need in your case.
NEVER restrict the flow on the suction side of the pump. It will cause the pump to cavitate, which will eat the pump from the inside out.Then you will need to buy another pump and start the cycle all over again. Eventualy you will have a hyd. system full of metal.

An easy way to drill from underneath is to rest your drill motor on top a a hydraulic jack, and have your 'assistant' run the pump handle and release screw.

Don't try to drill out an existing hole. It'll either take the corners off the drill flutes or jam up and break your arm or whatever else you're tring to hold the drill motor with.
Use a bridge reamer, this is a tapered reamer that finishes up to a straight dimensioned hole. Available at McMaster. I would guess you need a 7/8" but I could be wrong, you need to check. I've reamed cast iron before and works very well.

AS Paul Harvey would say �Now for the rest of the story�.

Some ten years ago at a sale there was a JD industrial back hoe off of a 400 JD TLB nothing else. Well when the bidding was done, I owned it knowing I would try and mount it as it had been, but on my 806(can you see my stupidity).

That winter I remounted the Freeman loader on the 806 to accommodate the BH mountings just like OEM (the light still isn�t on). A very time consuming job, but I do like a challenge.

All was well till I hooked up the Hydraulics and tried my new investment (the light came on). What a Bone head I was and my cheap BH was a big mistake!

I�ve tried over the years to find a valve stack that would bolt on for open center hydraulics or covert this one with no luck, but I did find a company that would help with finding the pump I needed.

So to get this mistake working, I bought A Vicers PVB-29 a variable volume, pressure compensated, piston pump to run off the PTO, made a gear case that will run the pump at the recommended RPM, and bolt to the back of the tractor just below the 1000 RPM PTO. Now if I can get the oil to the pump. With this style pump oil flows on demand only when a function is used, unlike an open center hyd system, so will oil heating be any different than the OEM JD 400 tractor? I have tried to find specs on the internet for a 400 JD, but haven�t found any yet, anybody have a OM that can help?

I wouldn't worry about the heat. You are already smart enough to realize you will need an oil cooler. So, here's a suggestion. Get the biggest cooler you can fit in front of the radiator. The cooler must have air drawn through it. If you can't or don't want to fit one up front, you can buy a remote oil cooler/fan combination... see

Hi Dave,

I think you"ll be very disapointed with using the hydraulic oil in the differential if your going to working the backhoe any length of time, over 15min as the oil will heat very quicky.

You might get away with using a large oil cooler for a longer run time but you would have to have the plumbing to where you can circulate the oil after using the backhoe hydraulics or allow sufficent cool down after using the backhoe or the tractor hydraulics will suffer.

28gpm is alot of oil. Most smaller backhoes use less than 20gpm pump. I would add a external tank under the seat or?

I ran into problems with my 340U with a Pippin loader/hoe with a 17gpm pump as I can get about 1/2hr run time using the differential oil. Thats it, then it needs to sit for 3 or 4hrs before using again as with the thinn oil there"s just not enough hydraulic pressure to continue working.

On My 806 there is a unused steel plate on the low right side of the tramission that could be drilled and tapped. I think it was suppose to be for the belt pulley/4wd intall.

The belt pulley bolts direct to the housing over the 1000 RPM PTO.

But could the plate you are talking about be on the left hand side under the clutch peddle? That�s where the MFWD gear case bolts. Just walked out to look for sure and that�s the spot I need!! A replaceable plate that I can remove to drill and tap, it�s low enough to draw oil but better yet not on the bottom of the case. I think you�ve done it!!!

Why don't you add a hyd tank to the backhoe. If I remember right you were going to use a pto pump anyway. Might be easier. Some backhoe and loader frames were made to carry oil. If you are worried about carrying to much oil you could add a small radiator and elect. fan and build a guard over it.

This is the reason for this exersize, is to use the 17 gallon of oil already in the trans and the oil cooler the tractor has.

The Loader frame of this 1960's Freeman Loader was abandon for oil storage a long time ago when it was on the WD-45.

I always heard a rule of thumb was to have at least 1 gallon of oil for every gpm your pump runs. Hope the heat doesn't get you.

I'm amazed a tractor backhoe needs that big a pump, this must be some monster big hoe!!!!!

The correct tap drill size 1 9/64". McMaster Carr has a Silver and Deming flatted round shank bit for $45.05 .
Tap will set you back another $59.69 .

Unless you are flowing a few hundred gallons per minute, the 3/4" hole will handle the hydraulic system flow.

Just screw in a 3/4" street elbow (with Rectorseal #5 on the threads) stop with it to the rear. Screw in a 3/4" close nipple, then a 1 to 3/4 reducing coupling. Then you have your 1" female threads to take your return line. A really well supplied hardware store might even have a street elbow with 3/4" male threads and 1" female threads. Or a reducing elbow and a 3/4 close nipple gets there quickly.

And you've not filled the system with ground up cast iron that will otherwise grind the pump and valve to make more ground steel and iron to further self destruct.

An inch or two of 3/4 pipe won't be much of a restriction at 28 gpm. A lot less restriction than a ten foot hose.

Do you really NEED 28 GPM for your back hoe? the WD45 didn't have that kind of flow but had higher pressure so they cylinders might be a bit small in diameter.

I have a Long 1099 and I find its a whole lot more controllable with a 5 gpm pump than a 10 or 22 gpm pump.

I run it on the JD 4020 hydraulics through a flow restrict or valve to keep from jerking it apart.

The other folks are right, just find the correct tap drill size, drill as straight as possible, and then carefully tap the hole.

However, I have two concerns:

Unless I knew exactly what was on the other side of that hole, I wouldn't do it. Remeber, taps are tapered and to get a good thread you have to penetrate the hole, at that size anyway, by an inch or two. Of course, you could get a pilot tap to start the hole and a bottom tap to finish the hole.

I'm curious why you want to enlarge this drain. You mentioned it will be a suction line. If that means you will have a hose connected to this drain, I'd be worried about knocking it off. Is there another way to approach this? Some other line or hole available on the side of the case?

To answer your conserns, The first one is well taken. Maybe I better drain the oil and look and feel before I start putting good money(order tooling) on a unusable hole.

These fitings will safely hide behind the 2pt fasthitch arms, so i'm not worried about breakage.

make sure you also back that tap out once in a while,unlike steel the shavings will mess up your threads if you dont keep it clean....

Cast iron drills and taps easy just use the correct size drill for your tap. You should be able to find a tap drill chart on line.

You have in my opinion an rather unique problem.Do not purchase a pipe reamer for this job.These reamers are designed to ream the burr from the inside of pipe after it has been cut off by a rolling wheel type cutter.The reamers have angle of about sixty degrees or more and are not designed to the same angle as pipe threads.Sorry,since I retired and moved all of my tech data is packed away some place so cant give you tap drill size.You can find the chart for that in Mc Masters catalogue or here on the net. If I were doing the job myself,I would open the hole with a die grinder and high speed burr taking frequent measurements.This said only because I've had a lot of years practice doing that sort of work.I am going to suggest an easy method. If you can make the right contacts.First go to an antique tool vender or machine shop or both.Ask if you can rent a ratchet post drill.This was commonly called an (OLD MAN )in the days when in common use.Explain what you need to do and that is only a one time deal.Rent a proper size taper shank drill.These are expensive so you will not want to purchase one. Then ask an ( OLD )machinist how to use the post drill.This done get set up under your tractor with the drill which you will need to rest on some boards in order to give you a base to build pressure against.Put the drill in place,tighten up the feed screw when you are lined up and start ratcheting the drill. In almost no time you will have the hole you need.After you have removed the drill bit you can once again use the post drill to help with the tapping operation. Just add shim boards under the post drill and set tap on the flat face of the ratchet and again start feeding with the lead screw as you turn the tap. It maybe necessary to place some thin metal on top of the boards to prevent splitting. I am sure this sounds complicated but it aint once you round up the equipment.I have all of the necessary stuff for this job but am sure that you are not in the Texas hill country.Also before you start this job have some source of air supply that you can introduce into the transmission to prevent metal chips or shavings from entering the case.Good luck.If I can help call me 1 830 997-8296 John Cooney

Hey Dave I don't know how much back trouble you have but this repair is a breeze.The biggest part is getting the tools.Once you set up the post drill you can do all the rest lying on your stomach.Only other thing to do on your back is to setup the tap then roll over do the rest. It may even be possible to do the job sitting up if tractor is about the right size.Once someone describes the use of these simple tools you can stand by and direct some young fellow on what to do while you look on.These tools are very basic common sense items. Once seen you will marvel at their simplicity and effectiveness.Go for it .I reckon you will finish the job in a half hour.I have recently done a similar job and am 77 years old.Call me if you wish.I have another easy suggestion to make the tapping phase even easier. Try this link for drill sizes. That is an awfully big drill to drill by hand,so be careful.I would approach it in stages,use several size drills to get up to the correct one.
