T_Bone,
During a recent welding conversation the question of carbon content came up as it relates to (required) preheat, post heat, thermal stress relief, peening, and distortion control were discussed ( argued about ). Over the years as a maintenance general superintendt I have always used the advice given me by a couple of engineers from the Minnapolis Electric Foundry in that " Whenever the carbon content is .30 or above special welding procedures are in order". This guide line, as well as others, given me by the same two old yard birds, I would bet they were at least 50 at the time, has served me well over the last 35+ years. I now have seen published that the figure of .40, and even .45 is being used. Whats your opinion?

Hi Earl,

I"ve alwys used the .30 chop off point for pre/post heat treatment but I haven"t been keeping up with the new steel alloys. Seams like the past 10yrs or so the alloys have become more complex and there"s no more of "general" rules to follow.

Cast steel and castrion have really changed. I"ve seen some metal advertised as cast iron that barely would meet the definition of cast iron. I wouldn"t even know what to suggest of how to weld it.

I"ve also been looking at getting a verticle mill and been on some forums trying to pick-up some general info and these guys are talking about using alloys I never even heard of...lol

Now you see why I don"t jump some in threads on how to weld a picticular metal type. I can look at a metal grain structure and pretty well take a good SWAG of how it should be welded but to say try "this" without seeing or knowing the exact alloy is more than likely wrong advice in todays world.

Sorry I"m not much help but since I retired I just don"t keep up with technology like I used too.
