my cousin has a forney c-3 model phase 1 230 volt frequency welder. he lives in baraboo wisconson so i cannot go up there and look at it. he bought it on a farm auction for 100 bucks 20 years ago and when he bought it it was pry 20 years old. (not sure about exact age besides old). anyways doesnt matter worked real well for what he spent. anyways it stopped working and he asked me for any help. unfortunatly i dont know alot about forney stick welders and thought id throw it out there to see what you guys know. he said and i quote i dont know this is what he said so i cant help you any more then what i know "it turns on and i can hear it hum but it wont weld" "i check the cables for breaks made sure the ground is grounding etc" "i took the shield (back)off and nothing is black like voltae spike (basically nothing painfully obvious so he has no clue. i like i said havent and cant look at it and he"s not real sharp so any things that thaey are known for or any quick simple checks i could give him would be appreciated thanks alot

I had a Forney welder I picked up for 3 bucks.
It had the plug in amp settings and was pretty big. I think it also had a battery charger. Any way I gave it away. I called forney, which now supplies the hardware stores with abrasives and welding supplies. No more welders. What model do you have? I got an owners manual and wiring diagram I can send You.

And just because he can hear a hum from the welder doesn't mean that one of the two fuses isn't blown. It could have a 110 cooling blower off one side of the 220, or one of the fuses could be partially blown, still passing some current.

Yes I"d be interested. Where is welder? Those old machines are awesome. If you have ANY need maybe you consider putting it in your shop but if not, no trouble finding it a home.

Hopefully your cousin is at the show this weekend and not home worrying about the welder. You should have used the show as an excuse to go visit and then you could fix the welder to boot!

Make sure he has covered the most apparent thing of all, that he still has current down to the welder and hasn't blown a fuse or had a 220 wire in the incoming cable break. There simply isn't much to go wrong with a welder.
