Hey all, good morning.

Wife wants to get a new weedeater for her to use. We've got one (an old Ryobi) that she likes but she can't start it by herself when it isn't warmed up--I have to. Once it is warm, she can start it. She wants to be able to trim when I'm not around, and that's fine with me. :-)

So, anybody have any recommendations for a gas weedeater with an electric start? She's a pretty small girl, so it can't be too heavy but it has to have some power or else it won't last here on our little farm. Can't be electric powered because of the size of the place. I'd prefer not to spend a gazillion bucks, either, but if we find one she likes and that's what it costs, I expect we will.

thanks for any advice,
Tom A

You need a Tanaka AST-210 its pushbutton electric start. Has a 20 cc 2 cycle engine weighs 13.2lbs solid steel driveshaft. I've used one for years and they are way ahead of the other trimmer brands. Extremely powerful and lightweight. I sell them so I'd be happy to answer any questions you have.

My wife has trouble cranking my F-20. If I would buy her a new tractor she would just want something else

I have a Troy-Bilt trimmer with an Easy Start feature. It"s basically a spring loaded starter that winds up as you pull with very little effort and start the motor easily. Works great for me...

B.K.,

What kind of weedeatin' we talkin' about here? Horseweeds? Saplings? If you mean mostly yard-type of stuff, I'd get her a rechargeable trimmer. I've got a B&D Weedhog rechargeable that I've used for three years now, and I love it. I've got two acres of yard to mow and trim. Most of the trimming is grass/light weeds. It carries enough of a charge to trim for over a half hour--plenty of time for me to "get 'er done". There'll be some who cuss this type of unit, but I've had gas types (including a Stihl that was a b*stard to start every time), and I'd never go back unless I needed to trim heavy weeds.

Good luck!

Ron

They aren't electric start, but the cheapy Weedeater featherlights are easy for a small person to handle, and usually are fairly easy to start, at least untill they get old. The best part is you can usually buy them for about $50 new.

All the reed port engine trimmers( weedeater, ryobi, homelite, mcculloch, bolesns, troybilt, etc.) that are half crank machines with the starter in front start easy when new, let'r get a couple years, then they are a pain to start. Toro sells a 24 volt cordless trimmer than is 115.00, works great, holds a charge for about 45-60 minutes. That is the only way to go if you want to only trim grass.

If it is possible you also might be able to rig up a weight operated starter for her. I had one for my mother to use on her pushmower. It basically was window weights and pulleys with rope. She could pull it up slowly and then let go and it would yank the rope fast and start the mower right up. Kind of my own redneck engineering to solve the problem.

Yes, the Echo I start is a real short pull, easy pull starting. You can spot them by the Red pull handle on them. Home Depot and Lowes Do not sell them. You gotta go to a outdoor equipment store to get them.

Two stroke junk is always hard to start when cold. I have a Honda, all of them are 4 stroke. Starts first pull, every time, hot or cold. It's very powerful and amazingly quiet. Not cheap but I wouldn't trade it for 10 of anything else.

Troybilt had both 2 and 4 strokes when i bought. Both were same horsepower. I would rather mix gas and oil for a 2 stroke than change oil in a 4 stroke. One less job to remember and one less mess to dispose of.
My wife won't go near a riding mower let alone trimmers and i don't change diapers do dishes or wash so i guess it's even.

What is the power to weight ratio of your Honda?? I have worked on 2 of 'em, would not have one as a gift. If I want a good trimmer with a good power to weight ratio that starts easy, I would buy a Redmax, 2-3 pulls, they start, very light weight. As for something easy to use get a 24V Toro cordless.

Enormous. It's far more powerful than any 2 cycle.

2-3 pulls in unacceptable, both to the original poster and to me.

A cordless? You have to be kidding! Those are for yuppies suburban lawn edging. I've got real grass, real weeds, thousands of feet of fence line... and I don't have all day to be playing with a trimmer. One pass with the mighty Honda and everything, 6" or 6' tall, it don't matter, is on the ground.
