I can't be the only one with this issue. Now that
I am in my 40's and using bi-focal glasses have
had a hard time seeing fresh oil on a dipstick.

Any tricks ?

Bill

A trick I"ve used just because its hard to tell where its at on a dipstick sometimes is get a clean rag or piece of paper and lay the dipstick on it leaving a oil line on the rag/paper

Hi Bill,

I use a all bi-focal lens also called reading glasses. Really makes working in the shop a pleasure as you don"t have to look above/below that line.

Try painting the end of the dip stick flat white or flat black. That should make a contrast to make the oil stand out.

Quit changing the oil. Dirty oil is easy to see.

I just started wearing bifocals about a month ago.

Man what a difference, now I can fall up a flight of stairs more often than down.

Ever notice when your walking along and look down how things suddenly get bigger down there, a clod that you would have easily stepped on or over before is now an obstacle that is guaranteed to put you flat on your face.

I used to hate golf, mainly because that stupid little white ball is so hard to hit square. Now when I look down its as big as a grape fruit and I can really murder the little #@%$&*.

And then there is the problem of having to answer Natures call in a hurry. You step into the bushes, unzip, look down, pull out a hair and pee right down your leg. Dang I hate that.

I got so fed up with bifocals, I had the lasik eye surgery back in febuary. Now I only need a pair of weak reading glasses occasionally. Still need good light tho, forsome seeing. Would do it again in a heartbeat if need be.

Reminds me of a neighbor we had who was a sawmiller and used big old Buick engines for power units. Every morning before starting the engine he would pull the stick like a holy ritual and wipe it on his clean overalls. The he would put it back in and measure the level then WIPE it again on overalls before putting it back in. his wife was a very neat and patient person but this annoyed her.

Sometimes have the same problem with no bifocals. I find that I like some of the brands of oil that are darker when new, much easier to see.

Trifocals corrected the problem for me.

Find a new eye doc. I went through the same problem and after 3 docs and 3 pairs of glasses finally found someone who got the prescription exactly right. On "no line" bifocals, getting the line in the right place is critical.

Hello Bill,
I am not saying my eye sight has ever been the best or the worst. Try taking the dipstick and heating it a little with torch. This will discolor the metal and make it a little easier to see the oil on it. Just an idea you may try.

later days mate,
Jim

Don't wear glasses, but still sometimes have trouble seeing fresh oil..... ....drill a series of small (tiny) holes in dip stick..... .helps me; don't know if it'll help with the bi-focals.

For me seems like even with the bifocal still need a lot brighter light than I used to. I've pretty much gotten used to scribing metal layout lines real deep so I can feel what I'm trying to do. Your results may vary, DK

Off topic comment...I used to have an older fellow work for me in my machine shop and I guess it was because he stuttered a lot that it never dawned on me that he always answered...(after doing a lot of stuttering)...."right on the scratch"...that he meant like right on the money...or...right on the layout lines! We called him Elmer Fudd...not disrespectful...just that everybody got a nickname around my neck of the woods. Fred OH

Bill
When my father needed to get a new pair of bifocals. He had the "close up" lens placed at the top on the glasses that he wears at work. For he rebuilds diesel engines and works on large construction equipment and with the "close up" at the bottom he always had a pain in the neck from trying to look into tight places such as under a dash. With them on top it cured the problem completly. Did make him level headed before he got completly use to them.

The best trick that I have found for checking freash oil levels is to sprinkle baby powder on the dip stick when removed.

I've worn ones with the closeup at the bottom, and another closeup at the very top, but focused a little further out for several years, and really like them. An electrician was the one that first told me about the idea. They are called "Double D" bifocals.

As my Dad says when I asked him when I would be getting used to my new bifocals a few years back, he looks over the top of his and says....."Never"

lay it against a paper towel, or light colored rag and look at the stain.
