I have a 0-1 micrometer I stored it in my toolbox in the garage all the way closed for a long time, I went to use it today and it was real hard to turn I got it to turn but only a few thousandths. I pull off the sleeve that you turn to make adjustments and then soaked it in eltric contact cleaner fron lps. put the sleeve back on and it is stil stuck what to do now.

A vice and pipe wrench might work, but I have had better luck with ether, or other solvent, than penetrating oil.

I"ve been around several frozen up mics and if they didn"t come loose, I loosened the nut on the threads and started rapping it on a wooden table top (from 4 different sides)and trying to turn it...they either loosen up or you hit them hard enough to distort the threads and throw it away...theres no in between...especially after soaking as the others suggested. Here is a tool tip on 0-1 micrometers. Never leave one fully closed when stored. If you stored it in cool temp and the weather warms up it the metal could expand and easily damage the frame or other parts. When you get it freed up use a very light oil or accuracy could be affected.

Gary

happymech --

Micrometer locks have been known to tighten themselves just sitting in a tool box, so it would probably be a real good idea to make sure that the lock is released before you get too far into your micrometer.

If the lock is loose and the spindle still doesn't want to turn, you'll want to get some penetrating solvent into the frame's bore and threads.

You say you've already taken off the thimble, and that's a start.

Have you got the adjustment wrench? If so, loosen the nut that tightens the female thread onto the spindle to make some room for the solvent.

Although Kroil or PBlaster are fine penetrating fluids, they stink to high heaven and I'd be inclined to go with a less agressive solvent at first. A 4:1 mix of mineral spirits to hydraulic oil (or Dexron-spec ATF) would be my choice.

Then I'd let it soak for a day or two, preferrably in a warm place. If, after soaking in a solvent lube, the spindle didn't turn freely, I'd work the spindle back-and-forth for a bit while holding the micrometer in the solvent lube and then let it soak another day or so.

Since it does move a bit now, I'd be very surprised if it wouldn't free up with the solvent-and-lube soaking.

John

I spun the vener scale around in hopes it would come off but no luck.

I will try soaking it next week I got to go out of town.
