In our local Harbor Freight store they have the item 40764 which is a 8,000 Lb. electric winch for sale for $175. which normaly sells for $339. This is made by Chicago Electric (China) Dose anyone have any experance with these items? I know it aint like our winches made in U.S.A. but this seems like a nice looking winch weight is 96 lbs. Any thoughts on this???
Thanks
Ron

Hi, I,ve got the same winch, only I paid $269 for mine. I would do it again in a minute. This winch has impressed me with it's pulling power. The first thing I pulled with it was a large azaela bush, it slid my z71 on dry ground. Put bumper against a tree, it pulled the azaela and about a six foot circle of roots. I welded a 2" receiver tube to the frame that came with it so I can use it on my truck or old jeep. I put a receive on the tongue of my flat bed trailer and use it to pull my tractor on. Works great well woth the money. Rick

Don't have a winch but lots of other stuff from HF. Usually pretty much as advertised but not as durable as the real thing. If you use a winch once every month or two, it'd last a long time. If you put it on a wrecker and it was run 10 times a day, who knows? Also, all winches rate their pull on the first wrap. The more cable on the drum, the weaker the pull (and the faster the pull).

I got an 8000 lb winch from Harbor Freight about a year ago. It pulls my steel wheeled AC 20-35 up onto the trailer with no problem.(6100 lb tractor). The only trouble that I have had is that one of the solenoids hangs up occasionally in the off position. Rap it with a screwdriver and it works again. Not great, but not as bad as it could be.

We bought one and put it on our trailer, weve pulled cars and tractors on with it probably twenty times now and it still works like new. We were a bit scepticle too but it has really been a nice unit for us. We even pulled a 99 oliver and an LA case up our steep ramps, And it did it.

Don't have any experience with them myself, but I've seen several comments about the cheap electric winches. One of the main things is that the rated pull is usually for the first wrap of the cable around the drum. As more layers of cable are added the pull drops off rapidly, and when the drum is full they may only have a 5000 pound pull. Also one comment I've seen quite a bit is that when new they will usually pull quite a bit more than their rating, but with age and use the pull drops off quite a bit.

Two of my favorite rules for purchasing anything:

"If it looks too good to be true, it usually is."

And another one from a friend of mine....

"You get what you pay for.... and sometimes less."
