When mig welding aluminum are there differant weld type wires? My supplier had only 1. A .030 wire in a 1 lb roll. Are there differant alloys?

That being asked, is there anyway to ID the type of aluminum you want to weld and select the best wire for the repair? Thanks.

Hi dozerboss,

Yes you can get different wire sizes. The larger the wire size the more amps that are required. If you have a small machine, 250amps or less, then I would stick with the .030 electrode size.

Your spool gun size will be the limitng factor of the size of wire spool (in lbs) it will hold.

Example: 4340 AL is very common filler wire for the 4000 series AL base materials.

If your welding techinque was sound (joint prep, heat setting, cover gas, in process cleaning, etc;) and you were experiencing weld cracking then using a 5000 series electrode would most likely solve the problem. However using a 3000 seriers filler would increase weld cracking.
