black welding rods

just wondering why my welding rods on my wards 220 buz box welding.when im welding along and stop the welding rod is black looks like the flux is gone on the rest of the rod.This is when there is about half of a rod left.Using 10 guage steel,1/8 6013 rod setting at about 80 amps thanks

Hi Bruce,

using 1/8" electrodes at 80amps is causing you to stick the rod to the work thus heating up the flux coating on the rod turning it dark or burnt.

Increase your amps to 120amps and hold a tight arc length. Your welds will look much better.

Do a search on this forum for "weld" and read for a few days. Alot of good threads about welding have been posted.

Find a old fridge put in a 60-75 watt blub, wire it so it stays on all the time problem sloved

sounds like damp rod. moisture gets in em and blows the flux off as you weld. Should get an air tight tube to store your rod in, especcialy if ya don't use much and it sets around for long periods of time
