Our '78 Loadstar has developed a nasty habit of starting only when it wants to. Once it is running it is fine. Haul 18 loads no problem, load up 19- she won't start. Wait an hour, wait a day wait a week, you never know when it will start.

Power to both sids of coil. Replaced "Gold Box" electronic ignition modual. No juice comming off coil wire to distributer. Tried cleaning all connections.

Inside the distributor is a little white plastic due-dad with two wires connecting to the "gold box" what is it? It looks like some sort of point-condensor thing which needs a gap set.

Any help or ideas would be appreciated. Thanks Grant

The starter is pulling the voltage down at the coil. You need to start it without the ignition ballast resistor in circuit. Correct wiring for the loadstars has a resistive ballast wire which connects the ignition switch to the coil. This is for after it has started. This wire is shunted out by a direct connection to the battery when starting. The bottom small terminal on the solenoid is used for this purpose. Make sure you have a connection between this terminal and the + side of your coil. This works great, starts right up every time but won't work real well if the solenoid is old and has crudded up contacts. I don't know what the "gold box" and "plastic due-dad" is. They are not original.

well if you don't know what the "gold box" is then you don't know Internationals. It is a type of electronic ignition to eliminate points.I suggest posting this question , on the binder bulletin, there are folks there that actually know IH .http://www.binderbulletin.org/ post under the forums

Thanks for the input Junk. Maybe you should check Binder. It's either aftermarket or International but not Loadstar, least not on the three that I have.

Go with JHesler advice. teamjunkyard's comments aren't advice and belongs where it came from

We have an older one that does the same thing. Found that if you hook the coil directly to a 12v source it will start instantly. Thinkin about just wiring up a switch to do this from the cab when it doesn't want to start. Looked for ever to find the problem and I think it is in one of the connections on the fire wall or the key switch itself.

The "Gold Box" is the ignition control module. The unit inside the distrubutor is called a "pick-up coil". It performs the functions of the points but does so electronically with out any wearing parts. The pick-up IS adjustable, but should only be adjusted when installed - the gap between the coil and rotor is set using a non-magnetic (brass) feeler gauge.
You don't say in your post, but I assume that you have a situation where the truck cranks over, but won,t fire. I also assume you have determined that you have no spark. The voltage on the wire from the distributor is too small to measure with anything but a low impedance DVOM. I would suggest the following:
When the truck won't start check the voltage at the positive side of the coil when cranking. As suggested it should be battery voltage, or very close to it (12V). If not I would suspect either a bad ballast resistor (if the 4 terminal type - if 2 terminal then it's probably OK) or the contacts in the starter have worn as suggested.
If you have battery voltage at the coil, place a test light between the negative coil terminal and ground. It should flash when cranking. If not I would replace the pick-up assembly and module (I understand you replaced the module - its up to you if you trust your particular brand of components). The distributor may need to be removed to replace the pick-up. Becasue of this and needing the brass feeler gauge to set it up you might consider having a local shop do that part of the repair. If the test light flashes, you have 12V at teh coil, and you still have weak or no spark, the coil is the culprit.

Good luck

Gregg

Well there is indeed a gold box in the binder. The one I replaced it with was a used one, but apparently it was working. Now- Dad installed the wires backward. I reinstalled the wires correctly. Still couldn't get a spark off coil wire.

Started playing with the pick up coil- thought we should replace it. I called three international dealers, two parts guys had no idea what it was, one guy did, but said we won't have it- call NAPA.

Went through all the major parts guys here, finally got a guy who know what I was looking for, but said they couldn't get it.

I'm hot and frusterated now. Decided to put it back together with the old Gold Box and pick up coil. I droped the screw down the distributor! Shoot me now. Fished it out with a magnetic screwdriver.

All back together - check spark at coil. Nice sharp and clean. Check spark at plug- looks good.
Still no start. Check carb - no fuel in bowl. Hit primer, pumped gas balm fires up.

Maybe it was just the connections all along.

Thanks for all you help, Grant
