Hi,

I am wanting to build a dock for my pond. The level changes so it will have to float and I'm thinking around 8'X 20' or so, maybe make a "T" shape to make it a little more stable. Any ideas for floats and designs? Oh, I won't generate any income from this dock, so I am looking for a "budget" dock. thanks

Thanks for all the ideas. I'll see what I can come up with and try to post a pic when I finish.

Do a Google search on "flotation foam" and you will find dozens of companies selling the 2 part expanding urethane foam to fill drums or milkjugs or what ever you decide to use for flotation. Im working on a boat project at the moment and I've already done your research. The lowest price I've found so far is at:>Link
Also,>Link to get some ideas, do a Google search on "dock float drums". This may exceed your budjet but you'll get some ideas.

Cheapest floating pier set up I"ve ever run across was done using old pallets and upside down milk jugs. It worked. You"re certainly not going to drive on it, but for a small pond, it was quite effective.

I have seen many different type of docks before plastic drums, styrafoam, pvc, irrigation pipe or a combination of both plastic drum filled with the spray foam. Plastic drums seem to work the best. seems like most people cann't find enough uniform foam and find it where ever they can. this makes one side float higher then the other. PVC and Irrigation pipe takes to much to get the dock to float for the cost, but does float level. I would say a U shape works better then a T. The U shape allows people to load and unload from both side of the boat and you can work on the boat from either side. You will also want to make sure the the dock is hinged to the bank so it will adjust with the level of the water. Also make sure you remove it from the bank, or water if the water ices over in the winter. How and to what you tie your dock into on the bank is the most important part of making the dock. So if it was me I would start there. Hope that I have given some helpful info

The old guy I sometimes work for had a floating dock built. He had a 2x6 frame built about 16 feet square with 5/4 decking on top. They put 3 rows of 2x6's about 2 feet apart to hold the plastic barrels in place. They used yellow nylon rope and eye bolts to hold the barrels in place. They built it on 4 saw horses and put on every third or fourth deck board or so,for weight reasons. After the barrels were in place they sat it on the ground with the tractor and then finished the floor. Then they scooted it down into the water. It has a non floating walkway about 4 feet wide, hinged with eye bolts and a piece of pipe through them. The walkway keeps it away from the bank and 2 steel fence posts and yellow nylon rope holds it in towards the bank, sort of at angles from each other. He has 15 plastic barrels on this one and it holds up
6 people ,coolers and beer and it never touched the water. Hope this helps

When I was a kid and Mom took us to her brothers place on a pond all the docks were made of 55 gal drums. Later styrafoam (spelling??) replaced some of the drums. If drums are sealed and painted they last a long time if you don't let them freeze into the ice. Pull the dock out in the freezing weather if you have it.

I'm in West Michigan and I would be interested in those pontunes (SP). I have a small private lake and was thinking that something like that would work for a dock. If you still have it and still want to get rid of them let me know.

Mark: I have seen a few smaller than you describe, made from PVC pipe. Heard a guy say he made a decent sized one using plastic Bbl's/containers and filled with foam for the flotation part. No idea of price on either.

Mac, I looked into the PVC route. I would need large sizes and the caps aren't cheap. The floats from West Marine are pricy, but would work great. What are Bbl containers? What kind of foam? thanks for the info.

Plastic barrels, look around some industrial site, maybe you could get them decently priced.

Mark,
I made one last summer for my pond. It is only 4'x 16' but the same principles should work. I used treated lumber for the deck and frame and used plastic barrels (55 gal) for the floats. I made the frame big enough that the floats slide up into it and fastened them under there with two fairly cheap ratchet straps and eyebolts. It has worked great for me. I left it in the water last winter and had no problems with it. On the hinge side I just used a bolt and 2 4x4's in the ground. I can take some pics of it if they would help.
