Old King stick welder?

A buddy recently told me he has an old stick welder he'd part with. Needing another welder like another hole in the head, I of course told him I'd be interested..... The problem is that neither of us know a thing about it--he got it cheap, used it very sparingly, and it's been setting in a corner of his garage ever since. It appears to be a King brand, model W1, made in Cleveland, OH. It's 150 amp, AC-only (originally he thought it was ac/dc, which was what got me interested, as my current Lincoln AC225 is of course AC only, but it appears upon closer examination to be AC-only as well) with a dial on the front to change amperage, and an interlock with the main on/off switch so you can only change amperage with the welder switched off. Amperage is visible on a brass wheel above dial. Any thoughts or info would be appreciated. He doesn't have a hook-up to run it in his current garage, and I want to know if it's worth hauling down to my garage to check it out or just saying "no thanks".

Probably a waste of time if your Lincoln is working OK.

Charles: I agree--it's now more of an issue of trying to find out about the welder from a curiosity standpoint. Also, I have a couple of "welderless" friends that might be interested, but as none of us (including the guy that owns it!) know a darn thing about it, we're reluctant to get something that may be unrepairable, even assuming it currently works. If it was AC/DC, I'd probably get it just to have it around, but if it's straight AC, as now seems to be the case, I'm probably going to hold off. Still, for the price, ($100, and I'm sure that's negotiable) it would get someone in the door without a second mortgage, provided it's in working shape and I could find out a bit about it.

$100 for an old, unknown AC machine is a little steep to me. As a point of reference, I bought an old Miller 400 Amp AC/DC/Tig welder in operable condition without accessories for $300 last year. If it came with decent cables, $100 might be OK but, if its bare, it'll cost some more money just to be able to weld with it.
