furnace blower

I was given a furnace blower to use in my shop. It had already been set-up with a pig-tail plug attached to the two wires coming out of the motor. When I plugged it in, it ran very well for just a few minutes and then I heard a click and it stopped. I unplugged it, and then found the motor so hot I couldn't lay my hand on it. After a few minutes, I plugged it back in, it ran for a while and again quit. The motor is a dedicated duty, rather than continous duty, and there does not appear to be any way to wire it differantly, other than to reverse rotation. Short of replacing the motor, is there any way I can make this thing work?

Covering the non motor side of the inlet is the most efficient method. Use a clip on ammeter to adjust until full load amps is achieved.

Thanks to all of you folks, I held a small piece of pegboard over the discharge side, covering about 1/2 of it. I need to make something a little more permanent, but I think that is going to fix it. Also cuts down on the noise, which is a big plus.

I had the same problem. I built a plywood box, set the blower unit inside the box, with a exhaust port, and also a controled intake port (hole in top of plywood, with a slide ) that lets the air flow over the motor, and your problems are gone.

Smaller blowers are usually shaded pole,no cap.The blower is overloaded,block about 1/2 the intake opposite the motor,it will speed up & move more air.You don't need to do anything with the outlet.

Partially blocking the outlet will restore the fan to the operating condition it was designed for, which was working with the restiction provided by the furnace and ductwork.

Blocking the inlet MAY be more likely to affect the movement of cooling air around the motor, and may cause side thrust loading on one of the motor bearings, and is unnecessary.

Most modern furnace fan motors ARE capacitor run, for efficiency. It seems like mobile home furnaces had shaded pole motors long after residential furnaces had gone to capacitor run motors.

I'm not into a p***ing contest today,sorry.You're right,most modern motors are.And most brands,especially low end,small -1/12 to 1/4hp still use shaded pole.Some blowers come with an adjustable inlet cover and there is usually duct/filter restriction. Its called the 'return'.Bearings? Usually bushings,unoilable at that.Just MOO,having BTDT. I'm over 40,born (3rd gen)in the business,don't know all of it,still learning.

Hey, thanks guys, restricting the output would never have crossed my mind. It does make sense though, when the blower was still in the furnace, it had a lot of ductwork to push that air through, thus a lot of resistance. I will experiment later, and post again with the results.

I had an old furnace squirrel cage I used in the shop, it had the same symptoms you describe. I covered one side(opposite the motor) of the cage opening and solved the problem. Evidently there was not enough restriction OR there was not enough air coming in over the motor. Anyhow it worked fine after that.

If it is a typical centrifugal fan, the motor is sized to reflect some air flow resistance on the output of the blower.

If you run it in free air, not connected to the furnace and ductwork, the motor will be overloaded.

Hold a piece of plywood, or whatever, against the output side to restrict the airflow, and go will notice the unit speeding up, from the decreased load on the motor. Peramanently attach your restriction to the OUTLET side of the fan, and post back with your results, please!

Bob is right on the money for the first, easiest, and cheapest place to start. The blowers won"t last without resistance.

I like using a old licence plate off a car. You can bend it around the sides and hold it in place with sheet metal screws.
Cover about half of the opening and see how it does.

Hi Rusty,

Are you sure your not missing a run capicitor? Should be a 5mfd or 7.5mfd on the two brown leads. Should have the cap rating on the plate.

Usually the stack rating will not have a effect on a motor as long as it's running inside a fan housing.

Maybe a little out of left field but a stuck starter winding contact will cause similar havoc depending on the type of motor. I have a furnace blower unit that I use to move air in my garage when I'm casting bullets. So far I've not used any type of resticter on it. It work's OK.

In the experience I've had, with the fan unrestricted, you need about twice the size of motor than it had in the furnace. You can either restrict it, put smaller pulley on motor, or use bigger motor.
