Howdy, folks.

I'm about to be in need of some instruments to measure parts for a rebuild I'm doing at home (it's a 2.4L Nissan engine.) I have decided to bite the bullet and purchase what I need rather than borrow it. What brands of micrometers, dial indicators, and telescoping gauges do you guys use and like? I have thought about looking at our local Craftsman counter, but figured y'all might have some other advice.

Contrary to public opinion, the Chinese made mics arent bad...Same for their dial indicators.

Polish made are really nice, Starretts are the best.(For mics)

B&S mics I dont really care for, and ditto for
Mitutoyo. Neither has the feel of the Starretts.

Now telescoping gauges, I"d go straight
to Starretts. The chinese ones are rough, and imprecise in feel.
I"ve bought 80% of my machine shop tools off of ebay, and have saved many-many thousands of dollars doing so, if you are smart and patient.

I haven't bought any measuring tools from this company, but I have purchased a lot of assembly tools from them with good results.

Darren,
I'm a journeyman machinist in Virginia. In my opinion, you can't go wrong with Starrett, Mitutoyo, or Brown & Sharpe. I've used all of them over the years. Personally, I prefer Starrett micrometers, and Mitutoyo or Brown and Sharpe calipers. The comment about getting carbide faces on micrometers is correct.

Let me throw an idea out here. Unless you will building an entire machine shop, you won't really need any of those tools. The machine shop that does the machine work will measure everything. Sure, it doesn't hurt to check. That's up to you.

If you want to assemble the engine, you can use any decent dial indicator, Craftsman or otherwise, to check end play. But if it's off, the engine has to go back to the machine shop anyway. Check with you machine shop and see exactly what level of service they offer.

The one tool you should spend some money on is a decent torque wrench. Believe it or not, Craftsman makes a nice one. Get a "click" type.

Mitutoyo tools have served me well, some of mine are over 25 years old & still very accurate. On micrometers, try to get the type with carbide faces. For occasional use, the Import dial indicators are OK. It might be worth looking on Ebay, sometimes people sell a large lot of precion tools. Regards, Davis

Spending a little time on eBay could let you pick up some nice stuff and save a lot of money. I watched a few things for a while and bought a B&S 24" verneer caliper for under $100. I sure wouldn't use it enough to pay the four figure new price but it is handy for brake drums on other things.
