I am playing with my $100 flux cored wire welder - does OK for what I need.... my question is this - obvious ly you want a wire speed so that u get a nice continuous weld, but if I get a good continuous weld at speed 5 why would i go to faster wire speed like 7 thru 10?
is it the faster u go the hotter it gets so the thicker the metal should you use a faster speed or what?

Hi Chris,

On the smaller amp machines you almost always crank the voltage dial maximum then adjust the wire speed for smoothness dependant on the base metal thickness. If your welding light gauge metal then you would to lower the voltage, thus lowering the amps then adjust wire speed.

The correct way to set a Mig welder is first set the voltage then udjust wire speed for smoothness. It really doesn't matter what number the dial reads as it's there for refference only so you can return to the same setting.

Two exact machines of the same type and mfg will not use the same dial setting, but close.
