I went to buy another roll to use with my Millermatic 250 running 75%argon/25%CO2. The guy at the steel/welding supply store brought out Anchor Brand "Unifil" saying he thought it worked as well as Lincoln L-56 (Superarc)- but the Lincoln produce was another $20. I bought the Anchor Brand (by Nasco, and made in Canada) for $40. I have not opened it yet, and have been wondering if there is a difference in brands. It takes me a long time to go through a roll, and wire cost is not a significant factor- and I am teaching my son to weld now.

I am thinking about returning the Anchor Brand and getting the Lincoln in case it does make a difference.

What do you guys think?

Hi Eeleater,

Yes electrode brand plays a huge difference in the way a machine runs. The more experience one has the more set in there ways about a pictular brand.

Me it's Chemtron for 7018, Lincoln 6010, Hobart 6013 and Lincoln for all other carbon rods.

Mig/Tig, Lincoln only. Lincoln has the most consistance from roll to roll.

If he's just learning then it really shouldn't bother him. What you might consider is to use that roll up on practice work and get another roll of Lincoln for project use.

Sorry I've never heard of the Anchor brand. That don't mean anything tho as I'm out of touch on the new brands.

There can be a difference between Brands of wire. I have purchased some cheap wire made in Italy and had feeding trouble, which caused me to use more consumables. Switched to wire made for Praxair and problems are gone. The wire from Canada should be good quality.

I have been using Blue Demon wire and I cant find anything to complain about. I bought a lot of it from my steel distributor, $30 for a 33lb spool, and I believe it is even made in the USA!
One thing you do not want to do is use heavier rolls of wire. I had a 44lb reel of Lincoln wire and the spool kinda wobbled around and the extra weight and drag caused me some problems, it must have overloaded the relay that powers the feed motor and then it wouldnt stop quick enough. The feed is a DC motor and the relay shorts it out to stop the feed. You can take things apart and file the points, but that one reel of wire caused a lot of problems.
