Does anyone know of a website where you can download programs for free (without infringing on copyright laws in any way). I'm looking for one that figures floor loads and joist sizes and beam and post sizes. I'm putting an addition on my house and one of those would be very helpful.

Your best bet is to find out what your local building code is, and get a copy of it, or find it at the library. Out here we use the ICBO and it has a table of permissible joist spans.

If you insist on getting freeware or shareware to do the job, try a google search on "engineering shareware" or "structural shareware".

You might take a look at the technical guild that the Western Wood Products Association has put together. It now requires registration but that seems to be free and the program is very good for western woods. You can get there by way of>Link
