Hot Chainsaw - No Start

I got Stihl 025. It's getting an attitude here lately. When it's hot it won't start. I'm trying my hand at bucking logs and this is a real problem. Any ideas? I bought a new air filter but have not tried it yet.

You jogged my memory. I use this saw maybe oncce a month, more often in firewood season. A few months ago, I lost the gas cap and I bought a new one. I believe that's when my problem started. :)

A few things to check:
1. are you using pure fuel or with alchohal, gasahol has a lower boiling point thatn pure gas and can cause a vapor lock.
2. bad plug, very common problem in Stihl saws and only use WSR6F Bosch plug or BPM6A NGK. Champion plugs do not hold up well in 2 cycle engines
3.Check compression, a 2 cycle needs a minimum of 90#s of compression to start all the time and under all conditions, it may start cole, but not hot with less than 90#
4.When it will not start, give it a whiff of carb spray directly into the intake, that will tell you if it is a fuel or ignition problem, you could have a coil going bad and breaking down when hot.

That would be the exact opposite advice I would give for my old Ski-Doo Blizzard. The only spark plug at any price that would keep that old pig running was a .99 Champion!

You a lucky man, then I have had several brand new Toro snow throwers with new champion plugs that would not fire out of the box. I replace a lot of champion plugs becasue they are fouled.

Vapor locking?...bad gas cap(or vent in cap pluged).Used to work for a tree service and the older Super XL's were noted for that...get em hot and they would'nt start...loosen the gas cap and you could hear the pressure being released...even seen a few times were the gas would actually come bubble'n out like it was boiling.We always kept some new caps on the truck.

Sounds like vapor locking for sure. My old 015 used to do that anytime it was used in the summer. Can't remember how I got around it - was a long time ago.

The Owner's Manual has a "hot start" procedure... something like "choke open, set to fast idle, pull with short quick pulls to clear flooding".

Another possibility is that the saw is a goner... as the cylinder wears it will start OK when cold but when the cylinder expands from heat you lose compression.

You don't get too many positions in the starting sequence. There's no idle control. It seems to have plenty of power when it gets started.

I'll reread the owner's manual but I thought run was the position for starting warm.

Hold the throttle (trigger) part-way open while you start it. I know this seems like you need three hands but it will clear a flooded engine.

Maybe the muffler needs cleaning, it does not take a lot of carbon buildup to keep one from running right.

There's a spark arrestor screen in there. I took it to the shop last year and they said it was clogged and that every other gallon of gas I should clean it. I cleaned it once about two gallons ago. It ran for year without cleaning that screen.

Hear - tell lots of people yank that screen out. What's my chance of setting the National Forest on fire?

From the factory I had an issue with one of my stihls. It was a simple fix - the spark plug cap for a lack of better desciption did not have consistent "continuity". While in the field and having a hard time hot starting I seperated the plug cap from wire by pulling it apart -- literally on my 066 you can seperate the wire and cap. Reinserted the plug wire into the spark plug cap and no more hot start issues. I hit the wire with a file just to clean off the surface for the heck of it while doing this.
