I have a 89 GMC p/u I just bought. I want to put a good anti-freeze in the radiator. What would be a good anti-freeze to use in central Texas. I noticed thier is a new one out by Havoline that has a dex-cool additive and Prestone has one out that is compatable with the Dex-cool. These are good for 150,000 or five years. A salesman at autozone said I shouldn't use dex-cool in my truck if it's a 89 model, that it is only for the newer models. But I don't see anything on the container or thier web sites that say I can't use it. Does anybody else have any imput on this. Thanks

Havoline's DEX-COOL is a wonderful product but is totally incompatible with "green" coolant, Prestone or otherwise. It says so on the container. The problem is that if even a little of the two are mixed, acids form which eat parts of your cooling system, especially the aluminum parts. The only way to make the change is to totally flush the entire cooling system; radiator, heater(s), hoses and the engine which requires opening the drain plugs(2) at the bottom of the block. You must power flush the cooling system for at least 20 minutes. It's a lot of work and may not be worth it to you but I did it 6 years ago to my 454 Suburban and have had no problems. If you go to DEX-COOL, get an underhood sticker from Chevy that states that "DEX-COOL" is used in this engine. If you don't and someone puts "green" coolant in your overflow jar, even the little bit that gets mixed and sucked back into the radiator is cause enough to have to re-flush the entire cooling system.

In Texas, you'll want to use a 50/50 mix of DEX-COOL and distilled water.

Also, don't believe the 150k miles. Hoses don't last that long. It should be replaced every 100K miles or sooner if you have to replace hoses.

GM DOES NOT RECCOMAND USING DEX-COOL IN AN ENGINE THAT CAME WITH THE "GREEN" STUFF. THEY SAY THAT THE EFFECTS OF THE DEX-COOL ONLY WORK IF STARTED IN GOOD CLEAN NEW METAL. NO MATTER HOW LONG YOU FLUSH THE SYSTEM YOU WILL NEVER GET IT COMPLETELY CLEAN. USING IT IN AN OLDER ENGINE WON'T HURT ANYTHING BUT THERE IS NO ADVANTAGE OVER STANDARD ETHYLENE GLYCOL.
