First let me say that it has been many years snce I did any serious wood cutting. Assuming that different brands of chainsaws are equally matched as far as power and chain speed and use the same bar and chain, what would the brand have to do with the cutting ability? Don't get me wrong, I have my brand favorites and currently have a Stihl but aside from competition on Tv the fastest cutting chainsaw that I have seen was a Poulan from big lots

Chain saw is all about comfort & reliability. Give me one that I can handle; doesn't cramp my hands pulling the trigger; is light enough to handle, and starts hot or cold, right away.

Don't know what you do, other than the competitions, where making more sawdust enters into the equasion.

Your assumptions on bar, chain, power, etc., are good but in reality there's no two that ARE alike in those categories. I had a Poulan saw -- went to help a neighbor cut up a felled tree. I'd even installed an agressive aftermarket (no-safety link) NEW chain from Bailey's. Thought I was tuff stuff. He started cutting with his Stihl -- which had the same size bar, maybe ran a little slower, but had a chain that worked like a dozen beavers. I put my saw back in the truck and hauled brush.

Chainsaws are all about power to weight ratio. For the weekend warrior, a saw that's 1 lb heavier or has 1 hp less doesn't matter. For a logger using it 12 hours a day, every ounce of weight and tenth of a horsepower are important.

Cutting speed is often more about the saw chain than the saw. Full-chisel chain (OREGON) cuts the fastest but will kick back if you get careless with the tip. And no matter how powerful the saw, it won't cut warm butter if the chain is not correctly sharpened.

I live in pulp land. All the loggers here use Stihl or Jonsered.

your are correct in one assertion about the Full-chisel cutting fast, BUT, full chisel chain will not keep an edge as long as chipper chain if you are cutting dirty wood. (wood that has been down for a while) I have used a smaller saw and outcut a bigger saw more than once. not going to get into a brand fight again, make sure you get a saw that is light, but powerful, and get a saw that has a top speed of 12,000 to 13,500 rpm, they will cut fast because of chain speed, but will not have any lugging ability. If you are going to buy a Poulan, buy the Poulan Pro, they seem to be decent saws and have anti-vibe, the green Poulans do not have antivibe and that will the biggest reason you will hate or love a new saw.
