AC Welding rods.
"Many" years ago, 50 plus, I fabricated parts for a food industry. Used a couple rods that "I believe" were 50% nickle and 50% stainless. One was 3/16 blue coated and the other 5/32 white coated. Maybe eutectic? Since then I have given my welding books away and my mind must went with them. Can someone give me the rod numbers and save my remaining sanity.

Sounds like Eutectic 680 .It was a rod to weld dissimilar metals and did a good job.

Larry:
Thats the right number(680) for the blue one. soon as I saw it I knew that was it. The smaller rod had 4 numbers. I keep thinking 1020 maybe, but that may have been silver solder low temp acet. rod for stainless. Even 6020 hangs in my mind? Sort of like playing dice. Thanks.

I believe Larry is correct-Eutectic. It is supplied to the mines here in Arizona but don't know where an individual can get it. Hope someone can tell us as I think the "blue" is a great rod for many purposes. I have trouble with running the "white" rod.

Hi Mac,

I never heard of or used a AC electrode for SS. That don't mean much as I'm sure someone makes one now days.

The current AWS numbers for SS, E-308 for SS to SS weldments
E-309 for SS to mild steel and is also good for some SS to SS welds depending on the grade.

And a couple of upcoming SS electrodes, E-316 and E-321

I don't know if this will help you.
