I would like to hear what compressors you feel are the best. I have sources for Speedaire, Ingersoll Rand (my choice but expensive), and Campbell Hausfeld (my boss' choice as the part shop will finance it). I am particularly interested in hearing about the Campbell. Please tell what influences your choice.

Thanks

I just purchased a Campbell Hausfeld 5hp 20 gallon compressor from Grizzly Industrial supply. I was replacing an extremely well worn (27 + years) Sears unit. I went with the CH unit as it had a cast iron compressor, oil lube, belt drive, and 2 cylinder compressor. I thought a cast iron oil lubed unit would be better than an oil less unit or an aluminum compressor. Hopefully I made a good decision.

Ten years ago I bought a 2cyl single stage from the orschlen farm and home store, and was pleased with it. It was starting to run longer and longer before it kicked off, (wearing out) I traded it at the BDC place in town for a 60 gal. 5hp 2 stage Quincy, outright it sold for $1200. with trade in $860. delivered and hooked up. It is not as noisey as some 2 stage I have been around, has a 70 second recovery rate, I have had it a year now and am very pleased with it. I run a small farm repair shop and use many air tools. I would recomend a Quincy, and like others have said buy a larger one than you think you will need. MY 2 cents worth.

Hi Jim, I just ordered a small one for my shop. Castiron compressor, 3hp 230v, 11.3 cfm @ 90, 60gal vertical tank, single lunger, Ingersoll-Rand $495 "delivered" from Northern Tools, #1592027.

There internet price was $35 cheaper than the book. Not an oiless compressor! Should do me just great.

Speedaire and CH are probably the same pumps. Sounds like you are buying a 5hp machine. IR is probably the best of the three. If you buy the IR with the T30 select oil in it, you will get a two year warranty. It's expensive oil though. IR's are good units, but they are really motoring now. They use a 234 type 30 spinning at 1400 rpm for some of their cheaper units. They have a new 5hp single stage 2 cylinder vertical twin cast iron unit which turns at a more reasonable 1100 rpm (if I remember correctly). It's a bit cheaper too I think. CH/Speedaire are excellent home user compressors, but they are often bought by small business because they are cheap and end up wearing out because they are not real 5hp machines and are asked to do the work of a real 5hp unit. 4cfm per horsepower at 100 psi. If the output of the compressor is much lower than this, it is a cheater. I would go with the IR. Don't go the cheap route with a compressor you are earning your paycheck with. It will end up costing you a lot more in the end with the never ending nickel and dime failures and resultant downtime.

The best air compressor built is a pressure lubricated Quincy QR25 series pump. Other close competitors are LeRoi Dresser,Gardner Denver and Champion pressure lubed compressors. These are the absolute top-of-the-line units, though, and will cost you more money, but will probably be cheaper to own in the long run, because the never break if maintained correctly. A good cast iron DeVair (formerly DeVilbiss) compressor is another good choice. Getting confused yet?!

I have found a DeVilbiss DACC-7167 Pro Air PLus air compressor that has been barely broken in but is ten years old. it runs fine as I fired it up for the first time in five years today. can one find the manuals for this compressor? Is it worth $500? Specs are: 80 gal, 16 scfm@175psi with the motor rated at 22 amps . I am building a new shop to restore cars and some wood working.
thanks for any help.
Keith

have 2 speedaire pumps...both were bought in 1978 have rebuilt one(cause it was not used enought to dry out water in oil)...the other was electric ..converted to gasoline in 1982 running 11hp briggs on it,,,,have seen this pump and engine run 8 hours a day...for weeks sometime..now the compressor is used a lot during hay season and not much the rest of time...the speedaire and champion were the same pumps when these were bought and the same when i rebuilt the electric one....what gets compressors is a tank too small and is only run to build up the pressure and thats it for the day..they need to run long enough to heat up the oil in the compressors...have nice day

Running the risk of sounding like a smart a##. the most inportant question would be how much you'll use the compressor and for what purposes ? I've seen people go way overboard or try to do a lot with a little with their compressors. Aguy i know let a salesman talk him into a cheap ''cheater 5 '' [400.00 single stage] to do body work .IT MELTED then he bought a real low rpm two stage and as the story goes lived happliey thereafter. Now the 1st machine would have done two families pumping tires and blowing filters but wasnt worth a pinch for a body shop.guess i'm saying atoyota will take you to the store and back,, but aint going to pull the gooseneck!!!! One more thing i've noticed 90% of people will add more + more tools and uses to a compressor as they use it .If you can afford it get one big +good enough 1st go around.

An Ingersoll-Rand type 30 would be my choice and that is also what I have and have used for the past 12 years without incident. I use synthetic oil in the compressor and the tank has an auto dump moisture trap.

We have a Campbell Hausfeld and it seems to work great. No problems. I recommend this if you don't want to spend the money on a Ingersoll Rand. If you are interested my friend bought one on the internet at CantonNapa.com Send them a message on what you are looking for and they will give you a price quote. Good Luck
