I'm looking for info on ultrasonic cleaners?
I recently bought a truck load of lapidary equipment from a fellow who was moving. He threw in an ultrasonic cleaner. I didn't pay it much attention until I saw them in the McMaster-Carr catalog. Now I'm interested in seeing how well it works. It's an L&R Transistor/Ultrasonic model T-14. Has anyone used one of these machines and do I have to buy a special solution for it? Can I make my own solution? Thanks for any help.

Scott

I have a Branson Ultrasonic cleaner at the shop. We use it to clean small parts of molds & dies. It will not remove rust or paint, but you can watch the dirt dissolve as soon as you turn it on. I use water with about 10% of a Purple-Power type alkaline cleaner. Never use any flammable solvents in it. After cleaning parts, rinse in water & dry. It always pays to put a rust-preventative on cleaned parts... they are so clean they will rust in a hurry. Regards, Davis

Hi Scott,

I have used them for cleaning antique clock and watch parts and jewerly. For fine things that damage can occur easy there great but expensive. Ammonia based fluids works well depending on what you want to clean.

I also have a viberator tub that I use for cleaning rifle/pistol brass. Much more cost effective and does a decent job but would not work on clock gear teeth.
