This is a little O/T, but I didn't get any ressponse on Paint & Bodywork board. I have a new muffler with the factory aluminized finish that I'd like to paint black. I'm thinking maybe the surface should be etched or sanded a little to get the paint to stick. Any thoughts??

I've used high temp paint on mufflers and woodstoves. It coats well but it moisture penetrates and it does rust pretty fast.

I spray over everything and don't have a problem. Use barbecue 2000 degree black.

No. Read the directions on the can. Most high-temp black paints are to be applied directly over any clean dry metallic surface. Remember, these paints don't "stick" by drying like other paints. They must be cured by the application of heat. So if you paint it off the car you will remove much of the paint during installation. I usually just paint them after installation for that reason. After 20 minutes of driving, the paint is fully cured.
