I need to replace the belt on my Craftsman riding lawn mower. I would like to do it myself, but I have not been able to find any instructions on how to replace it. I would like a diagram or some written instructions on how to do it myself.

If it is a pto model ie gearbox on cutter deck then you would need a 205-071 for the engine to transmission drive (cog belt) and for the cutter deck wings 2 205-061 or 1 205-061 and 1 205-055. Belts for the engagement are 2 205-141 or 2 205-038. If it has no pto then you would need a 205-071 for the transmission, 2 205-395 for the crankshaft to the cutter deck and 2 205-356 for the wings on the deck. I have all these belts plus clutches, axles, gears etc but i am in Australia. So if you want to email me i can give you prices and it might work out ok as your dollar nearly buys 2 Australian dollars at the moment. Even if you dont want to do that i might be able to get you a manual.

I've had trouble getting second source belts for my Deere tractor mower. Hardware and auto store belts typically won't hold up. I finally resorted going to a Deere dealer, some distance away. Not only were the Deere belts much more durable, but they were actually cheaper than other sources. Suggest you check local impliment dealers for compatable belts - rated for extreme use - steel belts or Kevlar, or other such materials are much more durable.

Since nobody else has taken a stab at giving you something to work with, I'll try although I'm not an expert.

Most lawnmower manufacturers use standard belts that they can buy off the shelf at low costs.

The belts you need are probably also used on automobiles or other lawn care products.

Suggest taking the old belt to an auto part dealer who probably can match it up. Even if the belt is in pieces, they probably can guess as to its original length.

If the old belts are not available, take a string and wrap it around the pulleys to get an idea as to the overall length. Again, the auto part dealer can show you belts that are similar in length.

Worst case is that you buy a belt longer and one shorter than what you think you need and try them out, returning the belt that didn't work.

Other than that, you might need to specifically identify the model number you have. Maybe someone else has a manual.
