I want to get some inside bed protection for a pickup I'm getting soon. I prefer an applied bed liner, either DIY or professional, like Rhino lining. I can do it myelf for approx $100 (Herculiner or Dupli-Color), or have it professionally Rhino lined for $419 + the governor. I don't use my trucks for hauling stones or firewood - mostly just bulky items like appliances or building materials. I like the anti-slip appeal of the non plastic liners too. I have also heard that the plastic slip-in liners have a tendency to hold in moisture underneath. They say the applied bed liners also prevent further rusting problems if not torn up too bad and can be "touched up". I would appreciate any experiences or advice. Its going in a very nice '94 Chevy fullsized extended cab that I located and I would like to keep it nice for as long as possible. Thanks!

I bought my siverado new in 2000 and painted on herculiner. I have used it hard and have scrached it some but only cause I draged some heavy sharp things on it. You can get it alot of times at memards with a rebate for $50 bucks. It was easy to do but it took the better part of a day. I have touched it up once with another coat just for looks as I spilled some paint on it but it looks great and NOTHING slides on it. It makes things safer and saves the bed from rusting, and looks great. Best bet for $50 bucks

I put a slip in liner in my new truck in mar of 02. Already has wore all of paint off sides of fender wells and floor. Now I wished I had put in a spray on liner!!!!!

I don't like the spray in liners and wish the truck I have didn't have it. If you want to toss the kids in the back and drive down the beach it's rough on their _____ .

In my last truck i'd just paint the inside of the bed from time to time. Didn't care if their were brush streaks and tried to get the color close or a shade or two darker - rusto --- what ever was on sale worked fine.

I my state itis against the law to let passengers ride in pick up beds, besides being very un safe.

Thanks for all the advice. I think I'm going to paint the inside of the bed and go with the bed mat for now. For what I'm using it for, I can't see spending that much for a professionally appllied coating. Thanks again.

I own and opperate a ArmorThane spray on bed liner busisness and I take out as many as 5 drop in style liners a week and see nothing but rust and corrosion under those things. I would choose either to use a mat and clean it regular or have it sprayed with a top name brand liner with a Warranty, or leave it as it comes. I deal with these things everyday. I also spray my custom tractor pulling hitches, trailer floors, trailer ramps, horse trailers, steps into my shop, roll cage on a race car. There are many uses of this product, it's not just a bed liner it's an Industrial Coating that resists just about anything. Had my ram 1500 done by rhino liner and after a collision (not my fault), part was resprayed by another rhino liner dealer and they didn't lay it on near as thick as first dealer. Make sure you talk to others or ask for references if you go that route.

I've used a sheet of 1/2 inch plywood in the bed of my truck for years. Haven't had any problems.

I bought a rubber mat in '99 for my super duty ford. this is the best money i've spent. Just try to slide something on it. looks good under it still too. I cut out for the hitch plate and it looks smooth across the bed. Gary

i did mine last year, its a nice chev 4x4 x cab short box,i rolled the stuff on myself and it went well , just remember only mix a small amount of the two parts together at a time, what you can get on in 10 minutes or less, then mix up more an continue.the stuff cost 80 bucks but if you watch you,ll find it on sale, it is DATE sentisive that is why they will put it on sale when its due date is nearly up or when they are goin into winter.i bought two boxes of the stuff figgering id do my old farm truck as well, but it didn,t work that way, i mixed too much up when i started and couldn,t get it all on in time before it started hardening. i have been hauling rocks for the wifes pond and have nicked it in a couple of places you can buy touch up stuff for 10 dollars from the manufacture, but i have a bit left over so im goin to mix it and see what happens here shortly. also use the brush for all the corners and do the hard parts like that first and start at the top and work your way down and out the back, tape everything off that you don,t want done, and i sanded my truck , pretty good not sure id do that as much again. it works well and no slip i put three coats on as i had lots, looks alot bettet than the slide in liners too.

I had the Rhino liner sprayed in my 1975 F-250 4X4 and I just love it. It is 4 years since it was done, and looks good as new. They have a spray you put on when ever you want makes it look like new and never gets slippery. I pull my 30ft. gooseneck with my 39M and my 37 F-20, I throw chains and binders, and everything else we haul, holds up great!! Remember you get what you pay for!!

I had a bed liner sprayed in by Rhino. I loved it. the only problem i had with the line is the person that sprayed it went a little thin.

I also think is you have a truck use. However, it was nice to throw a gas can or other slick bottom items and not have them slide when i stopped or started.

My 02 Ram does not have a sprayed in liner. I just but a drop in plastic line. Wish i could have had the extra $$$$$ for the spray in.

When I bought my new '03 Ram I began looking at spray-in and brush-in liners. I couldn't justify the cost of a Rhino lining, or other similar products. Plus, like mentioned, most installers are independent and you don't know what kind of quality you are going to get. I found this product, Durabak, and liked the way it went on. You can always add extra coats. It contains small rubber particles, and sets up hard. The best part is it is very slip-resistant. I am very satisfied with it. Oh, it starts at $80 a gallon for black, and comes with a roller. You also have the option to spray it on.

Did it do a good enough job with a roller you could see it used on a mud/work truck. Im building a 1979 ford and im debateing on weather or not to go with blue durabak for the cab. The be is an flat bed so its saying black. Any advise?

Sadly, the quality of spray-in liners is totally dependent upon the operator and they are all independent shops. If it goes bad, and many of them do, the people from the corporate offices, the ones who sold you with all their fancy marketing, will tell you to go eat dirt. I know many people who have been very upset with the results they got.

My $.02... you bought truck, right. Trucks haul stuff and the bed gets beat up. So what? After it gets a certain number of dings you won't even notice it any more.

Be sure to check out Line-X sprayed in liner also. I just had it done to a new RAM 2500 and am delighted with it. They offer a warranty - hope that I never need to find out how good it is. I went this way after talking with friends that had different spray on linings done. Isn't cheap, but I would definately go that way again. Every place I go I get compliments on it, and I have proved that it really protects the bed. Do a google search on Line-X.

although I agree with Ron, I bought mine to use it also. Bedliners keep the bed from rusting out too soon. my 97 RAM has a bedliner in it. they tend to rub the paint off along the side rails and bottom. They do however prevent the large gouges that later rust through here in the land of salt. I had the installer of the liner caulk the holes in the bed by the taillights as I could already see salt and dirt coming up through. eventualy I expect the liner will wear through the sheet metal in places.

If you have tie downs like in my dodge bed I'd opt for the spray in liner as the plastic slip in ones let grit and rocks get between the bed and liner.
